The Chrysalis

The day opens in darkness
clouds and rain the
only companions…still

the lightness of morning
cannot be turned away

through the smattering
of untold numbers
of raindrops
on my window

I see it coming

much like the chrysalis
that holds the butterfly
safe and secure

or is its’ beauty and freedom
and a need to ‘be’
trapped

is the chrysalis its’ prison
will it wake to the
darkness of day

or will it see light
seeping through

as it touches the raindrops
in its’ path
leaving them in its’ wake
as it breaks free

I see it coming

the butterfly will become aware
as the chrysalis
falls away

like the light that filters through
drying the raindrops
on the window

so the butterfly’s wings
will dry and spread

then the butterfly will finally
take flight
will be free

I see it coming

All The Wonder

Light reveals as much as we allow it to
when we open not only our eyes
but our heart

then our spirit soars and life
takes on new meaning

where colors are no longer dull
in shades of gray
but filtered brilliance

as in a rainbow after
a storm

it opens up a place deep
within our soul

big enough to hold all
of the wonder

where there are no boundaries
this place is us
me and you

this place is where life
flourishes

this is where I can begin
to know and accept
who I am

A Touch of Wind

There is a light wind pushing
ever so slightly against me
touching my face briefly
before moving on
apropos

caressing as a lover’s
gentle kiss a dahlia’s petals
to the ground to lie
beneath full blooms

soft pastel colored lavender
bright with life’s promise
now faded as though clouds
miniature have settled
at my feet

where once again a lightness
of wind inhales releasing
a puff to calmly
wrap itself

in and around blades of grass
coming to gently rustle
the twigs of the
fragrant mock orange
in passing

the wind coalescing as
tendrilled & ghostly fingers
is ever a breathing
companion to nature

even in a wisp of air
trembling a reed

The Alchemy of Water

Music swells up like mighty ocean waves
cleansing the sadness of my soul
permeating my thoughts
to quell the firestorm
within my mind

to which my dreams find me walking
along a sandy tided shore
each grain of sand sparkling
diamonds in a beam
of moonlight

a vestige matching my footprints
each one a solid reflection
of a path only I have walked
in heartache, despair
& triumph

before the salty brine of tides
comes to collect them again
to assuage each painful step
becoming an alchemist balm
a freeing spirit

New Impressions

Wide open spaces of endless miles
of fields, farms and tracks of homes

stand in stark contrast to cities
choked with factory smoke stacks
with the polluted exhaust of traffic

that rise up to collectively gather
in visible, relentless chains
of greenhouse gases choking
off life giving

oxygen the memories of a lifetime
of living growing accustomed
to cacophonic decibels
of noise
now silenced

replaced with nature’s music
a symphonic aura of colorful
notes

blue skies redolent of wind &
breezes filled with the green
chattering of crickets

sunsets sweeping the horizon
in pink and purple hues
akin to stringed instruments
playing

where a night is lit dazzling
with lightning and thunder
fire bright yellows and orange
an orchestration of astounding
proportions

there are new impressions
waking all my senses, increasing
my awareness

to add to and multiply memories
creating the complexity
& beauty
of a life

The Artistic Magic of The Madrone

The overcast foggy day creeps to settle
into the sunless summer morning
holding nothing magical or surreal

as held within the moments of salty air
hovering over the tops of ocean waves
collecting on beaches covered
in driftwood, grasses and
foamy tides

where upon the scenic artistry looms large
seeing breathtaking stands of Madrone trees
branches curving, bending to sky and ground

their paper like bark peeling ornately
as though the artists brush is continually
sweeping strokes of orange-red vibrance
to reveal a satiny silver glow
as polished

wherein I know now living far from
the majesty of trees and the salty smell
of ocean air that settles on my skin

true happiness can only reside within me
whilst close to nature’s wonder of
the ocean and Madrone tree’s
magic

Sunset Confection

Sunsets here cut a swath of farraginous pinks
reminding one of silky ribbons in motion
or lengths of stretched pulled taffy
held with invisible hands of the confectioner

who keeps stretching until there is but a thin
sliver of light kissed candy crossing the horizon
in muted tones of fading colors

turning dusky, obscuring the end of the day
where only silhouettes of buildings and trees
remain unmoved like giant sentries watching
with eyes that cannot be seen
but felt in knowing
seeing all

Turtle Rainstick

The tall piece of bamboo sets in the corner
as though keeping the walls from colliding
with the aboriginal turtle in mustard yellow hues
keeping a silent vigil, a respite, as the rain
signals a force of nature outside my window

I am reminded that I am a creature of water
my molecular being silent within a human shell

the wonder of a million droplets from a cloud
forming a single raindrop is mind boggling
as they gather in rhythmic action

creating puddles, streams, rivers, waterfalls
cascading exponentially into vast oceans
a home for other water beings living
within a life-giving force

and I listen in amazement at the symphony
that brings life to the earth I live on
where brilliant colors of flowers bloom
in gardens tended and meadows flourish
on mountains

replete with nature’s abundance of creatures
beasts walking the land and flocks of birds
taking flight tenured with bird song

am I not enraptured to know my heart
still beats within its fluidic capsule embrace
of the water that holds me ensconced
in safe keeping

that when the rain thus ceases its’ melodic sounds
the bamboo stick awaits but my touch
yearning to recreate rain’s wondrous music
the timeless aboriginal turtle
warm beneath my hand

The Truth of Hindsight

Hindsight is always better it is said
always invoking in me the transgressions
in my past of the egregious kind

conceived into an ethnically diverse family
curious of the differences, yet both drawn
and repelled like a moth to a flame

one of only a handful of such families
in an all-white neighborhood
though I did not distinguish it
then

my reddish skinned father and white mother
craving more but for unspoken reasons
spoken in private understanding

she from impoverished beginnings
he in accepting only European roots

agreeing upon only one thing in union
the dictates of societal norms for me
a child of the female persuasion

that marriage is best accepted sooner
than later & children are part of the
sanctioned outcome

but mind you if such an arrangement
is not a path upon which you wish to tread
then only professions of nursing
and teaching will suffice

for creativity in writing or artistic endeavor
will never sustain you in living
and you would know this
in hindsight

now in hindsight I only understand that
not everything that comes before
is better than that which
comes later

in hindsight I wish I had known that
choosing the passion of your heart
over being accepted
is what my path
Should
Have
Been

Passion

A Loquacious Morning

The morning wakens with a silent hushed breath
wet dew upon the grass leaving in its’ wake
the first dazzling warmth of sun rays
giving life the first inkling to stir

where swallows chirp in bird song loudly
swooping as if lifted by warm breezes
signaling to each other as they
seem to float on invisible air currents

as this new day leaves hesitation behind
heralding change as if a speech is nigh
unable to abate such verbosity
loquacious in eager announcement

to be heard even in a last falling leaf
caught in warmest subtle puffs of air
or the first cherry blossoms bright
as Spring has finally appeared
