Turbulent seas crash upon the shore oceans wailing while sweeping footprints from the sand from the sand footprints of those made by hearts no longer beating When did the beauty vanish behind shuttered lives in darkness while voices scream on distant shores surrounded now by "silence" Howling winds blow keening trees trembling leafs cry tears of pantone buried beneath a blanket of needles covering the earth a resting place for hearts abandoned alone When did the beauty vanish behind shuttered lives in darkness while voices scream on distant shores surrounded now by "silence" © Renee Espriu Photo is my own.Welcome to all of my visitors who have kept coming throughout my extended absence here. I am posting a writing today that is as inspired as it is somber. I was in my last year of high school when the Vietnam war raged on to take lives of well over a million. The music during that time reached some of those who would rally against such times as these and to this day this music stays with me. History will always repeat itself and times will change but war and the path of destruction and death will continue to be that which is made by greed and power. I won't explain here as I am certain there are many who will understand of what I write. Two musicians and lyricists continue to inspire and their music will continue to be relevant within our history. They are Pete Seeger whose music is "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" and Simon and Garfunkel whose music is "The Sound of Silence". Both are powerful in the message they send. I hear their music always and feel it within my heart pleading people to not only 'hear' but to 'listen' and to be those who not only 'talk' but those who speak', to not be oblivious to what is happening in our world, to not live in darkness or in silence. Be mindful of all those who have given their lives and those lives which have been taken. Be mindful and learn from those mistakes made and the world will once again see and remember all that has come before.
The Spiritual Heart
Waking to Life
Being alive, feeling alive is
having been awakened
Being alive, being awake
All feel as having been
resurrected
The sun’s rays shining brightly
as the brisk morning is
late of frost diminishes,
relinquishes, is vanquished
& is gone
So life is new and all signs
of disease and suffering
begin to recede into
the distance
of my being
The future awaits brightly
as a glimmering beacon
admonishing gently
to not fear
for everything right is still here
& will be here in the blinking
of an eye, in the fluttering
of a heart beat new
in all that is a gift we can see
in each breath we take
in all the beauty of nature
if we but take time
to see

Cherry Blossoms, Blackberry Vines and Laurel
The dark green leaves on blackberry vines
show their tender growth with spiny sides
to which tiny white flowers will emerge
as leaves on ten foot hedges of laurel
capture brilliant streams of sunlight
radiating from tiny holes in the clouds
causing the laurel leaves to glisten
as with brilliant yellow diamonds
being painted thus a gift from the sun
while borders cannot contain the heather
tiny lavender bell shaped flowers
whose beauty will not be tethered
all bow as the maiden queens arrives
pink cherry blossoms guild her boughs
standing regal beneath grey blue skies

The Beauty of Gray
People wake seeing a beautiful morning
a day to be thankful for, to love
though the day is gray and dismal
but not I
days to be thankful for are days
filled with sun, vibrant colors
birdsong in the air
my days
today for me was different, amazing
after sleeping soundly within
a cocoon of dreams
light with bliss
the day a typical winter gray morn
was stunning shades of gray
that cast a pallor over all
it touched
even shadows did not evade it
merging with the landscape
& holiday lights muted mists
in gray fog
but it was all a beautiful morning
as I greeted shades of gray
nature’s subtle watering in
colors of gray

The Conch Shell
To be cleansed by the salty brine
of the ocean’s ever incoming surf
is like being one with the conch
being held on the empty sandy shore
waiting for the waves gently lapping
its’ beauteous shell
to feel cleansed, to be whole
you can be still within the pain
the suffering you hold
be embraced as the conch is washed
clean and listen to the ocean
within your heart

The Chrysalis
The day opens in darkness
clouds and rain the
only companions…still
the lightness of morning
cannot be turned away
through the smattering
of untold numbers
of raindrops
on my window
I see it coming
much like the chrysalis
that holds the butterfly
safe and secure
or is its’ beauty and freedom
and a need to ‘be’
trapped
is the chrysalis its’ prison
will it wake to the
darkness of day
or will it see light
seeping through
as it touches the raindrops
in its’ path
leaving them in its’ wake
as it breaks free
I see it coming
the butterfly will become aware
as the chrysalis
falls away
like the light that filters through
drying the raindrops
on the window
so the butterfly’s wings
will dry and spread
then the butterfly will finally
take flight
will be free
I see it coming

New Impressions
Wide open spaces of endless miles
of fields, farms and tracks of homes
stand in stark contrast to cities
choked with factory smoke stacks
with the polluted exhaust of traffic
that rise up to collectively gather
in visible, relentless chains
of greenhouse gases choking
off life giving
oxygen the memories of a lifetime
of living growing accustomed
to cacophonic decibels
of noise
now silenced
replaced with nature’s music
a symphonic aura of colorful
notes
blue skies redolent of wind &
breezes filled with the green
chattering of crickets
sunsets sweeping the horizon
in pink and purple hues
akin to stringed instruments
playing
where a night is lit dazzling
with lightning and thunder
fire bright yellows and orange
an orchestration of astounding
proportions
there are new impressions
waking all my senses, increasing
my awareness
to add to and multiply memories
creating the complexity
& beauty
of a life

Sweet Layers of Imagination

There are moments I believe
that de’ja’ vu really does exist
when I walk into another world,
an alternate landscape
to escape my obsessed compulsion
crafting a skewed vision filled
with black and white reality
ethereal as stepping on solid clouds
drifting over a technicolor scene
where a yellow brick road
leads to perspicacity
strangely curious
or yet upon closing my eyes
I sleep so deep imagination unfolds
in sweetest layers I inhale
swallowing each one
anxious for
the next
beautiful as pastillage
settling on my tongue
like honey
I see a girl who speaks to trees,
smiling at flowers who
innately knows
her secrets
and where the eyes of animals
reflect her soul
back to her in
infinite profusions
of color
painting details like the spices
completing ingredients
in foods from everywhere
smelling of a full life
in every inhaled
breath
where upon touching a mirror
she steps through liquid mercury
pure as water chaste
before rigidity touches
her image
with age
yet these images might be to me
only lucid as a million stars
in the night sky where
Zeus holds court
only quick
in twilight hours
before I wake
