***Tarnished Goods***

The fox follows her along the byway to reach untouched forests
those forests unfettered by time and pristine oceans devoid of human touch
and each time always she passes freeways littered with a garbage landscape
the fox glances at bottles and fast food wrappers collecting
on roads under construction on a continuum of future whys
where the smell of black tar invades with stinging and burning
she should be accustomed but wrinkles her nose in disgust
as does the fox now her shadow trusting she will reach a destination
not concrete and black asphalt now covering the richness of earth
and does she still hope windows rolled and closed will be enough
enough to keep her safe or will they be unable to block
out the constant drone of the noise of a civilized world
a world that is one built impinging on nature’s habitat
one adding insult to injury and becoming a macabre graveyard
to endangered species & the fox wonders if he will be next
but he cannot bring himself to let himself be absorbed
into track homes swallowing up citrus groves as the raccoons have done
stealing into the night to rob garbage cans of their next meal
this becoming an unnatural habitat as it has for bears and possum
and he feels oddly fortunate that tigers and lions do not live here
but he can still hear them all screaming in pain underpinned with sorrow
and the fox listens as he follows and always the level of noise increases
increases exponentially with every tree cut down and concrete poured
and the fox feels his shadow growing less as theirs becomes more
where claustrophobic habitats are multiplying housing for a rising populace
and the need to reach the forest to be able to stare in awe at the ocean
propels them down the road and she knows she is like the fox
and that no amount of polish will shine and bring it all back
to bring it back to a time delegated to past histories before her
before the fox became her shadow on a journey to find survival
the only solution being the ability of technology to merge with nature
to be a part of the answer in preserving the beauty here long before us
long before becoming tarnished goods in the midst of climate change
long before the fox became her shadow and she became the fox’s shade

Tarnished

***Flight of A Fashion***

She traveled north
with her husband she chose
based on society’s mores
his decision accepted based
on her need to fly

trading asphalt and concrete
for a similar landscape
peppered with evergreens

leaving behind her self
melting in the heat of day
preparing for a rain cleansing
her of tainted memories

she traded her self-identity
with the prospect of years
rearing children alone
in unfamiliar landscape
needing to fly

always tethered & wings clipped
by a ritual of custom
her wings a rainbow

coloring her inside and out
brightened by the sun
dampened by the rain
her self conflicted interests

birds fly home to roost and nest
innate to their very being
so each time she returned to
her place of birth she
fell into memories

coming to know her colored feathers
of self would always remain
inside no matter
the need to fly

Colored Flight

***White Flags Flying***

Excitement palpable within me
butterflies dancing
fluttering wings beating
against my stomach

every year the very same
each time I am dreaming of
tall pines, pine cones
needles making

a blanket beneath the tent
heavy and green smelling
of musty canvas
and flags

waving on a line strung across
our site by dad
clean diapers drying
marking the spot

where the tent is pitched
a Coleman stove sets
ready to cook a meal
a lantern lit

lighting branches a reflection
a glow of campfire
the sky filled with stars
happiness overflowing

Camping Pines

***Pebbles In Sand***

She walked down a solitary path
left behind her mistakes made
like pebbles in sand dissolving

she drove a car into the night
along a desert highway

until all she could see were stars
twinkling jewels of light

she plucked pearls of wisdom
caught upon her hand from the wind

no one would miss her absence
life would resume without stopping
her choices a dissipating mist

this as she stood outside a house
realizing another day beginning

her children broke the silence
calling

Pebbles in the Sand

***A Siphon For Dreams***

The night is a siphon for dreams
drifting thru stars & moonbeams

nudging in its’ turn each muse
igniting imaginations’ fuse

visiting angels night’s shadows
a lighting of a candles’ tallow

The Night

***I Dreamt of The Moon***

I dreamt that I met you smiling
long before you were born

that I told you in sweet loving
to the moon and back we’ll go

that we held hands briefly soaring
seeking the beauteous moonscape

we traversed stars in the milky way
in meteorite showers of gold we played

we walked along dazzling moon beams
silken threads our carpets in space

too soon you left me in wonderment
life’s cord cut a spiraling empty place

& you sped quickly down to earth
faster even than Halley’s comet

that day I finally saw your birth
I remembered our dance among stars

marveled at so much of me in you
that your hands held stardust imbued

Moon and Back

*The Road Leads Away and Back*

The road leads away and back again
for the tiniest of babies now living
but for the creation of incubators

the path could be a distant memory
for those stricken with lifeless legs
albeit for the miracle of polio vaccine

memories might be a thing of life’s past
due to serious illness or head injury
life possible due to life support equipment

born with loss of limbs or due to accident
immobility the darkness of every dawn
mobile once again with prosthetics

every breath painfully labored and slow
lungs damaged by disease or by choices
the miracle of oxygen lines extending life

the nucleus of human life suddenly stops
a heart unable to support another moment
an artificial valve ignites beating again

for all of these reasons and many more
the list too extensive and long to write
the road leads away and back again

The Path Back

***A Miracle of The Heart***

I was but ten years old and fearless
steeped in the tradition of miracles
brought about by steadfast prayer

symbols of candles and holy water
rituals with the heavy smell of incense
chimes and bells extolling virtues

of those who gazed upon a crucifix
a man’s body nailed upon its’ image
a man whose story repeated as an echo

through time, through space in my head
someone I would never meet and who
lived in a distant past Jerusalem

I never questioned as my prayers filled
the vast void of my heart in need
of those miracles I believed would come

when an accident left you living
but only a shadow of who you once were
leaving me with unfulfilled prayers

feeling betrayed by a belief system
filled with rituals of incense and bells
of symbolic candles and crosses

a lifetime spent in understanding
that beliefs are what you make of them
that systems may not work or betray

that what I believe in is far greater
than myself a universe not made by people
that churches are made by people

when numbers far outweigh ones’ fear
solace and joy can need to be shared
that I loved you despite everything

Miracle

**Beautiful In Flight**

Be not one to tarnish
your self esteem by
climbing mountains
of others’ expectations

stand up for your beliefs
bring them into sunlit day
& out of darkest night

dare to dream your own dreams
lest you enter an abyss
of others’ nightmares
quagmires of doubt

tap into hidden strengths
& object to old school thought
& expound others’ worth

do not fear being rejected
based on the unacceptable
you are universally a part
of being beautiful

be recognized on your own merit
splendid & vast as oceans
quiet but fearless in all

sing out among starry skies
be brave as birds in flight
ply your wounds in love
be bold…you are here

Beauty in Flight

***Ocean Current of Life**

Knowledge is like that of a strong ocean current
undulating through the movement of life
& can be accessed of books, of people
or held tight in a Pandora’s box

our need to know like the curiosity of a cat
hoping that understanding will follow
& fall into place like that of
a lost puzzle piece

completing the picture of endless possibilities
it is the chord binding us all together
& can be a solace in understanding
or pose queries in knowing
