The Chestnut Tree

There is a behemoth of a Chestnut tree
now standing alongside my broken road
amidst the passage of time it’s seen it all
never made to fall nor can it be budged

houses built long ago now aged with time
gardens planted and many fences built
between slats of a fence it does not bow
with heavy boughs it’s always stood witness

whilst the wind is causing its’ branches
to bend & sway in rhythmic dances
you can hear the rustling of chestnuts
like tiny instruments softly stirring

waiting for another day another year
to find their freedom is in their falling
each twisting round in another season
to tumble soundlessly to the ground

    1. I am in the process of moving once again. Long story. But where I’ve been staying in Tacoma there is a giant chestnut tree. The squirrels and other birds really like it, though the ground is now laden with nuts and broken shells. Thank you!

      1. Thank you, Betty. It just seems that with older people set in their ways there is not room for any change. I had met and moved in with a man and we care for each other but can’t live with each other. Nothing new. So, then I moved in with a friend in Tacoma and she decided she wanted me out by end of October. So, now he says I can move back but only until I find a place of my own. If nothing else, my life is interesting and never boring….though at times I wish it were. So, just keep moving forward. Glad you are feeling better.

      2. Renee, thought I already replied to this but apparently not. ☺ Just wanted to say that I hope you find your own place soon and that all goes well. (I know how exhausting it is to move!) Please keep me posted on your whereabouts and I’ll be thinking of you.
