White outside my window
speaks of winter not yet done
of Jack frost peering
through curtained panes
as I peer back alone
a snow as blinding a sunny day
drifts ’round the curtains
of my bedroom dark
a light to give
the shadows life
in stillness
of the night
as teetering on the periphery
Spring flowers are in bud
hidden beneath the clouds
in pale of stillness
they doth pose
in silent breath
within the white
outside my window

A lovely winter poem. I like the snow that still shows the green plants in the picture.

Thank you! This is our first snow….and quite late for Winter…in the lowlands. We have had snow at times in February, though, and as the US is having a freeze across States it was bound to happen.

Is it very cold where you live? I heard of temperatures like minus 30 Celsius in Chicago.

We are much better than Chicago as it is only in the low 20s at night but for us here this kind of cold is difficult. It has been in the teens before but the East coast and the northern part of the Midwest always has much colder Winters. It is just unusual that the whole of the US is affected. It is called Polar Vortex. If you look online it will give an explanation. We are hoping for warmer temps soon but Friday night into Saturday more snow is expected. Hope it is warmer there.

Yes, I believe a reflection of the sun perhaps. Thank you for visiting. Hope things are looking up for you now. Of course there is the color of the little white flowers coming up from beneath the snow. Take care!

Beautifully written, Renee!
Hope you’re staying warm in this cold. We only had an hour of light snow down here, but north of Seattle where we used to live had a foot of snow. I know you must’ve gotten quite a bit too. At least these sunny days have been nice.
Take care! I hope spring will make it through in a couple of weeks.

Tacoma got hit harder than I would have thought and snow is still on the ground and with predictions of more I do hope we don’t get a lot again. I was born in CA and although I have been up here more years as an adult I can never get use to snow in the lowlands. For me it is something you visit in the mountains and then go home. I am certainly ready for nicer weather to come. Stay warm.

Renee, I see it’s snowing there right now and it’s heading here. Hope you stay safe and warm. Looks like a week of winter ahead for all of us. Then maybe spring will finally break through. I can imagine how hard it must be when you’re from California and not used to it. (I’ve lived my whole life in the Pacific Northwest and used to snowstorms, though we don’t have as many as we used to.)
Thinking of you – take care!

I’ve been here since I was 25 and am now nearing 67, but I will never get use to cold winters and especially not to snow. I have always thought it is to visit in the mountains where it gives beauty to a harsh landscape. But it is here and I do my best. I just don’t do very well staying indoors as much as this weather causes one to do and now since heart surgery it is so important I don’t get sick so I find things to do until better weather comes. Do stay warm and I hope you don’t get too much of the white stuff. Yes, it is snowing and will all night. It began around noon today. Take care, Betty.

So fascinating how year after year we cannot help but be inspired by winter’s tendrils during our quiet creative moments. I enjoyed this; a phrase like “a light to give the shadows life’ has me nodding in admiration.

Yes, it seems after being indoors so much the last weeks, any inspiration to be had (albeit cold) comes from the white outdoors. Thank you!
