Memories Dying Embers

Memory Illusive

I see you tangibly close beside me
laughter still within you
a smile on your face

do you still see me here & now
or a trace of a girl dancing

brevity of memories hinting at life
shared with children…with her

do you know she is gone traveling
with the moon & stars in heaven

I see you tangibly close beside me
laughter still within you
a smile on your face

do you know your time has shifted
as the sands within the tides

ensnaring the memories you captured
now scattered fragments of light

still your eyes embrace her once more
a cherished resemblance of me

wisps of years gone encircling you
briefly in moments & then vanishing

I see you tangibly close beside me
laughter still within you
a smile on your face

the embers are still glowing brightly
not ready to engage in dying

I know your spirit still resides within
I know there still is you smiling

    1. Thank you Ian. My dad who just turned 94 has had dementia for the last 5-6 yrs now and at times I can tell by something he says or just the smile and laughter, he is still there deep inside. He remembers family but if he is tired or ill of a time, other things are somewhere only he connects to. A little sad to see him slipping away but my hope is he will still be there when it is time to go. Hope you are your family are well. I am enjoying all of your posts from your journey.

  1. Beautifully expressed with sadness and melancholy but acceptance at the same time, where you stress the importance of “smile” and “laughter” that appear in the beginning, somewhere in the middle and in the end of the poem connected with “your spirit” and “the embers still glowing brightly” against the inevitable. The artwork is also very beautiful and expresses the slow fading away: the tree of life, the shadow of a man in dim light, the white and black rainy-like spots infiltrated in the picture as if an invasion of blackouts and discontinuity of human memory. The range of grey, black and white shades is as expressive as the poem where light and darkness intermingle. Lovely poem and artwork!

    1. Thank you Marta. I am glad you saw what I tried to convey in words what is in my heart. I will visit him in August this year. I usually wait until November but decided to go earlier this year. Hope you are well.
