The longing for warmer weather and sunny days
falls somewhere between Winter rain
and Spring flowers beginning to petal
but it all has given way to a heat so heavy
that it settles upon her August nights
as though weighted a substantial burden
it permeates every living thing and even
insects take refuge long for cooling air
causing the synergy of habitats once again
for the fine line between longing and needing
takes her back to the petals of flowers and green
days with a cool breeze a paramour of the sun

Nice write. I always think of Neil Diamond’s “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show” lyric “hot August night, and when you almost bet you can hear yourself sweat, he walks in …” 😉

I didn’t think of that when I wrote it but you are right! Thanks for you comment.

It’s true how we long for summer during the cool months – until the “heavy” heat of August hits us. Then we long for those cooling breezes… Guess it’s nature’s way of prepping us for autumn. (Which comes too soon, alas!) 🙂

good point, Betty – seasons move too quickly – worse, they accelerate the older I get, haha
great though provoking prose, Renee 🙂

Thank You for your comment! Sometimes I believe those who forecast the weather simply look outside of a day and change it as needed. 🙂

Yes it will be and then we will all want it to be Spring! I think most of us are fickled when it comes to the weather. Thank you!

Yes, the words are definitely evocative but I especially like the photograph. The bronzed hues and solar rings!

Thank you Diana. We are still in a heat wave here with smoke coming down from wild fires in BC Canada. It will be good when the fires are under control and the smoke haze is gone. Hope you are well.

Just fine – thanks for asking 😊 I’m in Vancouver Renee …. we are sadly cloaked in haze too. Some talk it will lift tomorrow. Fingers crossed for the folk with breathing issues.

Today was actually cooler so I cleaned up my apartment as two days this week had plumbers and maintenance workers in to replace the plumbing lines in the wall the other side of my bath in my bedroom. The work went on all day long both days and was stressful but with today being cooler was able to finally set things right again insider the apartment. We will have a break from the heat at least. Hope the weather there is alright for you.

Sounds hot, and dusty with workmen in the house repairing things.. But happy you are getting your place ship shape.. The weather cooler here for August.. Autumnal, I feel Autumn is setting in early.. sunshine and showers through out most days.. windy and when the rain comes it drops.. But hope it fairs better tomorrow ,.. Take care of you.. Love Sue xx

love me a hot august night – and even though the heat can weigh you down, i still prefer it to the cold of winter….brrrrrr…but then – we didn’t have so many of those hot august nights yet – just back from a walk and it was getting quite cool actually. have a wonderful day Renée

I don’t look forward to the cold but as the blood thinners dry me out when coupled with heat, the amount of water I have to drink is overwhelming. I often think of days growing up where running barefoot in the Summer sun was all I needed to do to be happy. Have a wonderful day as well Claudia. 🙂
