aloha Renee. very cool on the Navajo dye chart. i like the way you got here from “cave painting”. i went to the Chicago Museum a few times and i really liked going to a room that had cavalry ledgers that the native americans had gotten in one way or another. in the ledgers, they drew. those drawings fascinated me. i know the Navajo have a great tradition in imagery too. so the chart appeals to me a lot. fun.

Thank You Rick. I have it hanging in my bedroom above my art table. Love to see what colors were actually taken from so long ago and now perhaps some still are but just different packaging…so to speak. 🙂

in India, they use dye pigments which are not “considered” permanent by most tests. however what they do is dye the cloth and set it out in the sun for a few or more months. it of course fades. yet a little change in the color of the cloth occurs. they repeat this process i forget how many times but something like 30-50 times. what they end up with is a cloth color that does not fade. it’s not necessarily the bright color we associate with the pigment. it is however very rich and light fast. which is how they get such beautiful clothes and fabrics in their traditional garments. in that process they may even combine steps with a different pigment which of course creates subtle differences in the end product. i’ve probably not explained the process with great accuracy. however i saw villages where this was done and it was way fascinating.
