***THE COVER OF DARKNESS***

The house quiet at night
revealing no sound but
her children breathing
softly amidst creaking
noises of a house at rest

She sleeps lightly & listens
seeking things out-of-place
her eyes open to seek in
darkness familiar images

A glimpse is caught barely
from the corner of her eye
a small child, a girl moving
slowly down the hallway
softly making no sound

She rises to follow her
knowing it must be her own
but searches in vain only
finding no child there

Hurrying back toward the
bedrooms she checks each bed
her children covered and still
every night she looks always
to find where she has gone

The day brings questions
she cannot keep away
nor does her face keep
hidden what night shows her

Her friend lives next door
did she not ask her of a child
who simply leaves no trace
her rather calm reply
so you have seen her too

I normally do not do prompts but found one of interest to me at Jamie Dede’s site https://musingbymoonlight.com/ some know by THE POET BY DAY. This is the Wednesday Writing Prompt. Some people believe in ghosts and others not so much. Have you seen someone seemingly not there or know of someone who has?

    1. This happened to me as a young mother. My friend next door researched and found a large farm house had been there before the homes we lived in and that a child had died there. She had seen her long before I moved in. My husband worked nights so at first it was very disconcerting. xoxo

  1. yes, I do believe in ghosts, spirits or whatever you choose to call them because there is only a thin vale between the living and the dead, I have had several family members visit me in my dreams sending me messages after they leave this world

  2. I don’t believe in ghosts – though I do enjoy a good ghost story. I thought that introducing the neighbour, really added a chilling finish to the piece – which was wonderfully rendered.

    1. I am glad you enjoyed the read. Some things are simply not in our realm of understanding and that which is in the place of spirit can be more difficult than most to understand.

  3. Intriguing write, Renee. I believe that there are those who we can see who dwell on the “other side.” My own mother, who has been ill lately, confessed to me of seeing someone in her room the night before she went into the hospital. I was sleeping in the next room and she thought I must have left the front door unlocked so this man could wander into the house. No, I didn’t! Certainly some medications can bring on hallucinations…maybe hers did, or maybe not.

    1. This actually did happen. I will send you an email later (just sent another one) and explain. When I was very ill I believe my own mother was with me. Some things cannot be explained away. Your mom really might have seen someone. You might never know.

  4. Nice poem, good job. Gosh, I’ve seen many ghosts in my time. Well, let me be clearer: some ghosts and some spirits, both human and those in nature. My husband and kids also see these ‘unseen’ things. So of course we know they exist. I’m stunned some still wonder, but it doesn’t change what is observed, again and again. Cheers, Renee!
