New York Hamlet

i am traveling the byways of
new york reaching deep
into antique shops and
2nd hand stores looking for
nothing in particular and

there by the side of the road
in a small new york hamlet
i see  posted neatly out front
a sign “Homemade Preserves”
so i stop and park as i am

intrigued and so i walk
to the front door of a
well-appointed house knocking
so as not to disturb and
who should answer but you

i’ve read about your rising
fame and as newspapers tell it
you are ‘never too old’ to
try something new and you
certainly did as you’ve shown

i feel at ease as you smile
at me inviting me in for
biscuits and jam with tea
your eyes twinkling so as
though we’ve met before

and i so want to know why
you never painted before
when you were young..not
that eighty something is
not…and so you answer

without falter that there
never was time with children
to raise and a farm to run
and happiness comes from
where it comes and i see

now that your life’s been full
so when i leave, on that
my traveling day and see
images of all the surroundings,
it is like i’ve seen it all

before on the canvasses where
you captured them in the
snow and sun, the church and
the town, the farms where
people live and i see then

that it really is ‘never
too late’ to do something new
when there is time and yes,
‘happiness comes where it comes’
in the byways of a NY hamlet

  1. it’s never too late to start something new…oh i LOVE this… so cool that she started painting at such a high age… recently read about a woman who started writing a novel when all the kids were grown up and she gave the same reason, she said she never had time for things like this before…oh and i’m thinking about what i’ll start doing when i get 80..smiles… i always wanted to paint you know…smiles

    1. Thanks so much Claudia! She really thought more of her family than her paintings but became somewhat of a ‘household’ name regarding American painters. She gave away her paintings at first and later sold them for only $3 and $5 dollars. They ended up selling for millions and I think she really could not believe it.

  2. ya know…maybe i also should open a real pub once i turn 80 where i serve home-cooked meals, give young painters the opportunity to show their work and where i would have poetry readings…ha…smiles… and poetry workshops…and…and…smiles…see..this inspired me…love it..

    1. I so look forwared to your next idea but will read it early on before I go to bed. LOL I am happy you are inspired because that is exactly what you did for me. I relate to her because it is only been the last two years I have finally been writing on a regular basis. When I raised kids that’s what I did. My writing, my art, all came to a hault but it can still be done. Take care.

    1. Thanks Brian! I really wanted to post something about someone famous but that was a woman. I had to really think on it because I can come up with any number of men but women…not so much.

  4. …good for her to at least never gave a dream of creating something new… it is always inspiring to know someone despite of old age can still bring such joy & change & inspiration to the world… as an artist myself i could say she humbles me from deep within…her paintings are so close to heart & you can easily connect as it is done with passion & truths from long lived experiences… when i got a call for poetry my mind initially refused to have go as i was still attending college back then & felt like i have no time for such a thing… but then when the call keeps going inside i realized i don’t wanna die with this poetry in me without letting ’em heard & so i write & write until i can no longer stop… thanks for poem… i genuinely enjoyed it… smiles…

  5. As an artist she is an icon…her style so traditional…but there is a saying about life beginning at 40…so many women are making career changes after the kids are grown..at least try things they had put off for years 😉 We can’t wait for the golden years because they can be illusive 😉 Nice post

    1. I have written and drawn since a young girl but when I got married it was all about raising children..five of them took a bit of effort…so now is my time. Have had my site now for 2yrs and at age 60, I feel like I’ve got so much to write and so many art pieces to do. I so admire this artist. Thank You!

  7. I love this one, Renee. I like that you found a woman to showcase too and the fact that she discovered her talent at such an advanced age is very inspiring…it really is never too late to learn something about yourself…

  8. Nice to have you back. I was mostly gone when one of my sisters came for a month long visit…she’s just gone back home last week. Also had other visitors during “spring break.”

    1. I like this when someone out there is on their site when I am. It doesn’t happen often. I’m a bit worn out having to go back to work but was glad to see dad in any case. Do take care and give that sweet baby a hug from me.

      1. Me too…pretty cool isn’t it. It’s hard to go back to work after a break I know. I’m sure your dad and sister appreciated your visit. I see that sweet baby again tomorrow…I’ll give her a hug for you, Renee.
