To all my visitors, this is a fix sent to me by our blogging friend Amy, of whom many of you visit as myself. WordPress changed something about preferences and unfortunately put check marks in boxes most of us would rather not have. One of those allows you to get email comments from people who are commenting on other people’s sites. Say, when I comment on your site and this box is left checked, it will cause everyone who leaves a comment there as well to have their comments sent to me, when these should only be going to the person whose site they are commenting on. I am entering the fix here, should you wish to try it, if you do not want your email to be overloaded with comments you should not be getting. Thank you to those who visit on a regular basis and I welcome any newcomers as well. Happy to have you.
On your Dashboard, left column, click “Settings.”
Under “Settings” menu, click “Discussions.”
On “Discussions” page, scroll WAY, WAY down… to just above Avatars section. You’ll find some checked boxes, including “Allow: Follow Comments.”
Uncheck that box.
Then go to the bottom and click on ‘Save’.

Thanks for that advice it was getting really frustrating

I like getting emails from those I know visit on a regular basis but getting emails from all of these people you don’t even recognize is a bit much. Welcome!

Hi Trisha, If you are getting comments in your email from people you don’t know that are commenting on sites you have been to then that is the problem. If not, I hope you do not start. Welcome!

Thanks Renee. It drove me crazy for a couple of days last week and then I discovered that they’d automatically checked, send me follow up comments on every blog I visited, so, once I saw that I then made sure I unchecked each blog I go to before I comment, But, I did just go to my settings and check that box was unchecked too. I expect they got a lot of complaints over doing that.

I’m glad you figured it out. I am so not a system person so when Amy told me I was happy to find out there was a fix for it. Some things WordPress should simply leave alone. Welcome!

Ok, I have a question.. say I make a comment here to you and you respond to me…will I get a notification (if I un-check that box) letting me know that you’ve responded to me? I do want to know if someone responds to me. Am I understanding this properly?

Yes, you will still get my responses but just not from everyone else that comments on one of my posts, which is what has been happening. Say, I go to your site and comment and then my email is filled with all of your other visitor’s comments. If you stop getting my comments then let me know but so far I don’t think that is happening.

Thanks for clarifying that, Renee…I was wondering. I have unchecked the box now.

No problem. I could not figure it out but Amy from ‘Sharp LIttle Pencil’ told me, so now not so many emails as before. You should only get the ones from other sites and not all the ones from the other sites commentors that are those you don’t even recognize. I was thinking…’Who are these people?’ LOL

Thanks for this Renee, Im late arriving here so already sussed it out.. But it was very annoying to start with until I realised what was happening, as you had to unclick the boxes on the comment Section on peoples blogs.. And I went into my own Dashboard to sort out my own…
And still me email box is on overload! hehe.. Hugs to you xx Sue

Sometimes the people who run these sites need to leave well enough alone or as they say “It it isn’t broken than don’t fix it.” LOL 🙂
