Three Years Today

three years today not
tomorrow giving rise to
yesterdays filled with
sorrow and trepidation

angst beating against
us like rain drops to
pelt out songs of dismay
pain like no other

causing us to walk in
our own shadows trying
to keep the pain at
bay until another
day and still the rain

came down to wrap us
secure in the fashion
meant for bringing forth
life and love with
emotional passion

we wept in silence an
effort to be brave
standing fierce against
the onslaught of a
disease rending

you mute most days
covered in blankets
against the inner chill
freezing your blood
a prisoner your will

three years today not
tomorrow giving rise to
yesterdays filled with
sorrow and trepidation

we are unbelieving now
the sun doth shine an
unbridled warmth we
walk among the living
cautious to walk forth

secure in our hesitation
did it really ever
happen that cancer
took our lives now we
took them back again

This is dedicated to a woman who, when diagnosed with Stage III Breast Cancer, took her faith and belief that all would be well and fought to overcome and now three years later is cancer free. Her faith and fierce determination carried her through.

  1. Faith, courage and hope are all so powerful, I am so pleased this lady overcame it and is now cancer free. Your prose is powerful in its imagery. A lovely dedication

    1. I had not ever been a caretaker for someone with cancer but this piece is dedicated to my roommate who helps with the bills and my mortgage so it was an experience I hope never to go through again. Cheers to your sister and may she ever live a long life. Love to you as well, my friend.

  4. I’ve known several such people, including my own mom who lived with cancer – more on the off again – from age 36 when she was pregnant with me until age 76 when she died of breast and colon cancer.

This is a wonderful homage. I wonder if you would mind if I posted it on “Into the Bardo” Will check back here for your response.

    Thanks, Renee.

    1. Thank You Jamie and it is quite alright if you post it again. Is ‘Into the Bardo” something on your site? Sorry but not familiar with it. So many places within the Blogging community. Sorry to hear of your own mother’s years of difficulty fighting this disease for I do know sometimes it is a lifetime of stepping forward to fight over and over again. My heart goes out to you for some memories are not always what we would choose. Hugs!

      2. Thank You Jamie for feeling that my writing has a place on your site. Not a criticism at all but my last name is missing the “i”. LOL It is not an easy name to write or pronounce. I will certainly send anything else your way I think would fit on your site…in the very least, will run it by you and you can say yes or no. I would not be offended if you said no. I have been working overtime at work this week so have been worse for wear and very tired. Hope to get back to my site soon, though. Take Care. Blessings.
