Child Star Adulation

Shirley Temple curls

Standing still as
she wraps my hair
round her finger

Patent leather shoes

Always worn holidays
kept shining like new
bought large to last

Petticoats overflowing

Difficult to sit on
sticking to my skin
not worn too very long

Era of my childhood
adulation of a loved
child star remembered

Shirley Temple Curls

Watched a biography on Shirley Temple tonight and had memories flooding back of mother trying to get the curls just so with the dress standing at attention, the total package to shine with my patent leather shoes.  Difficult for mother to do and the difference between me and Shirley was I had dark hair and an olive complexion. Loved her movies growing up.

    1. I still can’t believe I can be taken in by her all these years later but she was a child star that stood out from the rest and even when she went into politics she struck a chord with many people with a personality that drew them in. Thanks Rose!

  1. When Shirley danced with Bill Robinson, it was movie magic. Shirley’s mother was a pain, though; she would push her out onto the set, saying, “Sparkle, Shirley!” Ugh. Stage mothers!

I love all those old movies, and seeing teenage Shirley in “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer” with Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Rudy Vallee is always delightful, too! I highly recommend it.

This was a lovely take on Shirley, Renee. My daughter is Jewish, so her hair was already curly and oh, so dark!! Amy
