Brilliant Stars

The evening sky’s light dims as night approaches
while the silhouettes of mountains and trees
hover as giants lining the distant horizon
all creating the initiation of wonder

as the painted palette of life dulls to grays and blacks
stretching out alongside a winding road
as seen through the windows of a car
two brilliant stars appear to follow

while the road twists and turns they like magnets
draw attention to quiet stillness and light years
become closer than a planet’s nightly orbit
for Venus and Jupiter shine as beacons
within the mystery of the universe

Awakened in Time

There are moments when time seems to stand still
to those of us who are trapped in its’ wake
as though our boat has lost one of it’s oars
thus enabling numbers of concentric circles
forming a whirlpool, disadvantaged proportions

where time seems to be held equally captive
in a time warp as though another universe
holds sway unknown to us until we are crossing
it’s unseen boundaries causing ripples
across the water a stone casually tossed
in by those onlookers unsuspecting

for we are unheeded until a life changing event
spins us ’round for us to suddenly take notice
of all gone unseen in Nature’s wonderment
and it is then we see clearly life’s window
open before us at breathtaking possibilities
to realize how long we have been away

Bejeweled Prisms

Once again the intrepid wind has abated
a force to be reckoned with in time
as it pummels sturdy houses, tender leaves
nothing safely harbored in its’ wake

but abate it does, glorious it may be
replaced with a bitter cold, crisp dawn
another jewel lit morning scenes
of frosted houses and icy lawns

the grass crunches beneath my feet
held captive in tiny bejeweled prisms
reflecting everything and nothing
that can be seen with the naked eye

but it is amazing to envision all
the possibilities of nature as it
holds  such glittering diamonds
within its’ outstretched hand

even on an inclement day with storms
with unbridled destruction & loss
the aftermath can be beautiful awe
when everything grows is now new

nature is the master of all it surveys
painting over and over again landscapes
it created, to create yet another
landscape within its’ place

IMPOSSIBLY POSSIBLE!
Giving me pause to wonder

All The Wonder

Light reveals as much as we allow it to
when we open not only our eyes
but our heart

then our spirit soars and life
takes on new meaning

where colors are no longer dull
in shades of gray
but filtered brilliance

as in a rainbow after
a storm

it opens up a place deep
within our soul

big enough to hold all
of the wonder

where there are no boundaries
this place is us
me and you

this place is where life
flourishes

this is where I can begin
to know and accept
who I am

Before My First Breath

Dragonfly Blue

Dragonflies are timeless bold creatures
found in the amber fossils of millennium
as is innocence secured wonder cocooned
in everything I saw around me
whether it was earthen brown
or flowers christened
by the sun

I drank everything in endless thirst
always yearning to understand
and to grasp all the words
to weave into life
even when threads
were frayed

So the years did not diminish
my questions nor
bring solace
to answers

There is youth no longer here
when reflections are
made of wrinkled sagging skin
but youth only rests
within the perimeters
of my mind

So that there will yet be a moment
where the light shines bright
and the fire burning glows
revealing the happiness and joy
I felt in being aware

That there are those things timeless
like questions and answers
held within my mind
not loved nor cherished
with my heart

I know now without pause for doubt
there will always be
dragonflies

A Life Betrayed

She lives the only life
she has ever known
inside someone else’s home

she wonders how she came to this
miles of fields and distance
a breeze touching her
now frail being

did someone leave her here
without her knowing and
will she wake one day
to find she’s dreaming

for she loved him so in her way
but was he a mirage or
just a ruse she wrote of
in her own knowing

before her body did betray
and stole her life
and youth

Christina's World

This painting rendered by artist Andrew Wyeth will never be able to access the mind of the young woman who gave rise to its’ inspiration. Christina Olson is the subject of this mysterious and haunting painting called ‘Christina’a World’.

Hummingbird Mishap

She had never seen such a tiny bird thus her first introduction to it was one of total surprise. A sunny day as always and she played outside as all that lived there from the roses, bushes and trees were enough to make her happy. If it were up to her she would spend all of her time there for even some insects caused the curiosity in her to grow except, of course, that of spiders. She learned to stay clear of them for she grew up learning that some were not welcome, such as the Black Widow, so therefore she felt it best to leave them be.

It would have been a day like any other, she playing and exploring but it was about to change and cause her wonder she had not known there was. Her father was busy doing what fathers did in a garage and she paid him no mind, really. He, at one point, set the sprinkler to watering the grass and she watched as he did so.

She would remember it always. One minute things were as they always had been of a sun warmed day and the next the fastest creature with wings lay upside down on the concrete patio. She marveled at it and asked what it was. Her father turned and looked down with a smile, walked over and gave the little bird a nudge with his finger. It suddenly flipped itself over and was off faster than a blink of an eye.

Heart beating excitement
a wonder of flight
seeking flower nectar

“It’s a Hummingbird”, he said. “You don’t often see them because they are so fast.” I stood speechless and marveled it had been so close.

The art piece below is one I finished to go with this story. I used acrylics, watercolor and something to increase the life of the acrylics so they wouldn’t dry quite as fast while I worked. It is done on canvas. Lately I am feeling rather like a chemist with my paints but enjoying the process.

Chilli Pepper Lights

Altered Google Image

the first time i saw you
i wondered
how anyone could be
so animated
a mysterious possibility

i had needed a roommate
to share the expense
to balance the cost
to help make sense

of coming thousands
of miles to a place
not familiar
faces all blending
never congenial

i walked a different land
streets unknown
nothing planned
to meet you

bubbling over with
so much enthusiasm
i gingerly broached it
a tremulous chasm

we walked into your
loving abode
art panoramic
stories untold

chilli pepper lights
hung enchantingly so
about the ceiling
embracing my soul

the first time i saw you
i wondered
how anyone could be
so animated
a mysterious possibility

Just to say, that some roommates do work out.  I only spent a year at seminary and have been friends ever since with Paula, an amazing artist and a person with heart. Here’s to you, Paula!
