Bits of Wisdom

Even as the common brown squirrel
senses that temperate weather
is at hand

digging in earnest for small nuts
he has hidden, his eyes
are eager with expectation
at the treasure
he will find

I now forage for bits of wisdom
left timely for my discovery
still visible in the space
of invisible footsteps
laid before me

noticing that as the sun’s rays
enhance the squirrel’s
brown coat of fur
a brilliant bright spot
against green

wisdom comes from all venues
even the most young
at heart

counseling me to heed not
others’ paths in life
for mine is my own
uniquely woven

so that I find the bits of wisdom
I seek are within, not without
but in the mirror
of my soul

the need to shine brightly
to touch every moment
that is only
within my
own grasp

Soul Reflections

Brilliant Crystals on Wrought Iron

The stark contrast of white
made of brilliant crystals
against the shiny black
of the wrought iron fence

brings to mind the striking
dichotomy of life’s journey

parallel to my very own
stretching out farther behind
with a shorter distance
forward

being finally alone within
my own skin, my own otherness

a life of contrasting colors
of realizing differences
of trying to fit into
a smaller space
of acceptance

yet in doing so, giving away
pieces of my ‘self’
until I am left wondering
what is left

as I now turn the page
of another chapter
to come facing the mirror
reflecting my own image

do I realize I am now alone
to accept my otherness
my differences

understanding the helix
of the genetics snake
is both the same path taken
of flesh and blood

but also parallel beside
others in my diverseness

is that which makes me unique
both repelling me from
yet pulling me to others

like that of the white crystals
of stark white snow snaking
around bushes, curving ’round
branches and clinging lightly
to the black wrought iron fence

there is a twisting and turning
only barely discernible inside
the double helix of
a strand of genetic DNA

telling me to be accepting
of my otherness even in needing
to be with others

Stark Contrasts

The Moon Waxing Gibbous

Image Taken From Public Domain Pictures and Digitally Altered by Myself.

First Moon 2018

The moon waxing gibbous yet still
slicing a swath of brilliant light
as a star cloaked in clouds of grey
heralds in another new year

while fallen leaves rain-soaked
leave paths of design wind-blown
on still another cold winter night

speaking in cursory tones of apathy
clothed in ice or frosty breath
billowing as tiny puffs of clouds
as revelers send fireworks skyward

each past year is now a footprint
knowing garnered as grains of sand
stitched into the living fabric

of each life taking every step
along an ocean bathed
in luminous moonlight

as unique as the night sky filled
with a moon waxing gibbous

Pooling Rainbows

This is in response to Rick Daddario’s 30 DOH/Days of Haiga which you can read more of at https://19planets.wordpress.com/2017/09/07/haiga-2017-007-30doh-sanctuary-in-hand. The piece of art below is my own done in acrylic and watercolor pencils with several techniques. I have also digitally added to it as well.

Intertwined Colors

***Dovetailed***

Uncover the striated complexity
Of the ethnically diverse
Like compressed layers
Of sediment

Accumulated by every person
Over the vast expanse
Of time carrying
Us forward

Where there is no playing field
But only discovering
Dovetailed links
One beginning

Do not espouse your perfection
But embrace all hearts
Open all doors
To differences

Skin colors bright as rainbows
Lifestyle only as life
All disabilities
Works of art

To those who hold disease
As angels upholding us
Giving us strength
To carry on

Strength is only in creation
Of those understanding
acceptance as grace
with eyes open

do not eschew sameness of all
but uniqueness of design
remembering beauty
of complex diversity

these are the coalesced wonders
bringing all life together
increments of being
pinpoints of light

The Color of Envy

green envy

smoldering green with envy
she did not know of
having plenty but dreamed
of store bought pretty clothes

not handmade ones of fabric
that she chose to
craft on the Singer
as she had learned to sew

taught by her mother who
was taught by her own
using bolts of cotton with
colored threads adorned

she did not know then
of the loved passed down
in every neat seam
or how it made her unique

she only dreamed of being
the same as the girls who
like candles burned brightly
but smoldered green with envy
