A Dance Of Epic Proportions

The fog is heavy as a blanket
& thick enough for warmth
but chilling to the touch

the heaviness of how it lies
upon the landscape
muffles sound

a density that ensconces trees
& enfolds houses

one might believe they can
all but move it aside
with the touch of a hand

but it will not move
not willingly

it will wait below whilst
a brilliant shining orb
burns above &
cannot be seen
nor felt

a dance of epic proportions
goes on outside
my window

who is the real master
or mistress
here

a hidden shift that will
only reveal the answer
by one of the dancers
next moves

but for now as in a game
game of chess
it is a stalemate

the dancers seemingly
frozen in time

A Bitter Embrace

The fog moving with stealth
settles in for the night
heavy & without substance

coveting each nuance of sound
even the leaves drifting
to settle upon the ground
are silent familiars

this chilling miasma still here
as morning arrives within
its’ bitter embrace

a mask covering snaking streets
alley ways and buildings
where even lamp lights
shine bleakly
dampened

a spider abandoning its’ post
leaves dew drops glistening
as jewels upon its’ web

Fall Familiar

Radiant Sound

She always thought of time as that of a thief in the night. As she lays sleeping it will silently and quickly take minutes, hours, days, months and years from her already long life. She wakes in the morning feeling as though she has lost something, misplaced during the moments of tiredness before she lays down to sleep. It will come to her, certainly, and she will find that which is lost is still within her reach. But the worrisome object of her concern does not appear.

She goes about her day watching the telltale signs that she is late for an appointment. Perhaps the sun is too high in the sky now, there are far too many people already busy about their day. The air once coolish, settling on her skin and the tiny drops of moisture from the marine layer of air, has warmed urging her to shed her hoody to expose her arms to the sun’s rays. She parks her car as quickly as a full parking lot will allow her and approaches the seven story building. After traversing the steps she enters the door and takes the elevator up. But, no, she is on time for the ritualistic drawing of blood to tell her that her blood in neither too thick nor too thin. A small price to pay for her gift of life orchestrated by a synthetic valve within her chest.

constant ticking clock
radiant sound
within a beating heart

She walks into the afternoon sun and views her surroundings. She is always surprised and amazed she is still here to view the horizon as though she is seeing it for the first time and is only now stepping into her life.

Where Shadows No Longer Reside

fog settles in like an old friend
like a shoe well worn..comfortable
like a thick moist, milky grey blanket
covering everything in chilly dampness

the tug boats push slowly forward
trying to slice open a path
using their lights as knives
moving painstakingly
the mist begrudging them passage

the tugs speak to each other
in the octaves that suit their size
letting go their horns loudly
a higher pitched trumpet
a lower pitched bassoon

the night presents itself
like the backdrop on a grand stage
inky black velvet deep and dark
where shadows no longer reside

as the dense thickness of fog
gives way to no purchase
to any living being pulled in
by its’ unseeing arms and hands
or any inanimate object
as here only sound transcends

*****CURLED LEAF FALLING******

a curled leaf
falling
slowly
touches the ground
without
making any sound

when the haunting past
of flickering images
in shadows cast
no longer stalks
your dreams

can the obituary
seem to be
a means to heal
distant
memories
hardwired nailed down

you will be a plaintive
no longer
but seek solace
in images
much stronger
in a broken spirit
set free

a curled leaf
falling
slowly
touches the ground
without
making any sound
