A Child’s Request

The shadow of leaves from a tree
dance across the house next door
but in the darkness of last eve
only the children’s shadows
poured

dressed in Halloween costumes
finer than any Hallows Eve before
they came and kept leaving their
ghostly imprints on concrete
floor

smiles and laughter challenging
fears of a society that they
would dispel as though magic
were in the air and fear
just queerish

a memory of one small girl
a costume only a thin cloak
her words uncovered for she
asked for only a hug
nothing more

my heart was warmed
by her gesture
of which I obliged
in loving
measure

******Gifts They Brought Me*******

pussy willows fallen from
the pussy will tree
dandelions plucked
with small hands freed
no longer unwanted
the gifts they brought me

faces stained with hints
of blackberry juice
smiles shining, wide eyes
from a berry picking sleuth
containers nearly emptied
the gifts they brought me

stories written about family
clay ash trays, a mobile too
a card on mother’s day
the sound of music playing
to fill my heart & soul
the gifts they brought me

even the laughter & tears
the many unsaid hopes & fears
days filled with moments
none of them ever dull
& the best thing brought me
the gift of themselves

My children and grandchildren are a huge part of my life and without them there would be a huge gap, a hole to large to ever fill. There have been joys and sorrows and challenges throughout the years but I would never trade any of it for the experiences I have shared with them have shaped my life and the person I am.

Spirits Remaining

alive and vibrant in their spirits
one moment all smiles and the next
gone leaving us wondering why
looking for answers to bring light
for their smiles and spirits bright

wondrous creatures in their spirits
teaching life lessons in the moment
imparting words of wisdom to us
leaving us to look for the light
for their smiles and spirits bright

amazing we had them amongst us
to give all the love that they had
now angels watching ‘oer families
brilliantly shining radiant light
spirits remaining shining ever bright

I have thought the past few days if I should write something for these souls taken from life and from families in such tragic events for it is difficult even for so many of us who do not know, and yet we do, these people who were caught up in another’s troubled life, only to become part of it in the end.  I can relate as a mother, grandmother and one who loves to teach and see others learn.  These are but a smattering of my thoughts as my heart goes out to those in Connecticut.

Portrait Borders

Four pairs of eyes
watching me
unaware
all brown, one blue
I am entranced
by their smiles
where
they are captured
there in their
youth
varied colored hues
remaining
timeless
forever standing
still
within my
portrait borders
a gift given
freely and
to few

Bright Eyes

Pleasantries noted, hugs exchanged
with smiles given all around
tempting bright eyes telling me
all about experiences teenagers
have where all I can say is
“Too much information”
