Shadows of Hidden Things

A tiny clay mushroom glazed
And fired to reveal a forager

Apples left for Does, Bucks
Uneaten except for the bees
That swarm

Black crickets chirping
The sound slicing through
The night silence

The lone black and white cat
Flees for a safe refuge
His hunting forgotten

The river current time changes
As the coyotes respond in kind
howling

BEGINNINGS IN FOOTSTEPS

Beginnings sounding of arid days with days too many
of sweltering sun, searching for shade, waiting for night
and the coolness setting in softly touching skin in relief

where stepping lightly on asphalt cushioned the burn
until calloused feet screamed less wanting ever only
to walk the sands of beaches and to soak in a saltwater
ocean and close eyes to the brilliance and drift away

to step in life’s millions and millions of footprints
each made with tenuous and anxious anticipation
hands always reaching out trying to touch the future
new beginnings are filled with Nature’s pine and fir

each day more precious than the day before the one
woke up to where quiet is profound in whisperings
and the boughs of trees tremble as the wind touches
each leaf to the tiniest pine needle shouting a presence

that only ever rivals the ocean waves distantly breaking
upon the ocean shores you once trod in the beginning
but never truly the beginning of where those footprints
would lead to another place and new shores not distant

where dreaming in another star filled night only shines
a light on memories old and new that are your life
woven together upon land and sea beginnings

Brilliant Stars

The evening sky’s light dims as night approaches
while the silhouettes of mountains and trees
hover as giants lining the distant horizon
all creating the initiation of wonder

as the painted palette of life dulls to grays and blacks
stretching out alongside a winding road
as seen through the windows of a car
two brilliant stars appear to follow

while the road twists and turns they like magnets
draw attention to quiet stillness and light years
become closer than a planet’s nightly orbit
for Venus and Jupiter shine as beacons
within the mystery of the universe

Where Words Cannot Follow

There is trepidation in every choice in love
where words cannot follow your heart’s desire
during the heat of day that melts into night
where the songs of night birds penetrate

your dreams in the guise of that which inspires
you to reach greater heights on plateaus above
that keeps you falling into the darkest depths
in deepest canyons where you will climb to the light

for your search is never ending, always beginning
in the brisk clean air of a morning’s chase
of fleeting images now entwined in your memory
of rapids in a swiftly running pristine river
the smell of wood smoke upon your waking

to all the possibilities that perch upon words
that carry the emotions that dissipate quickly
as though clinging to the morning’s mist
evaporating with the heat the sun delivers
only the fragrant air of the trees remain

Ever Widening Circles

Ever widening circles of life contained in the circles that grow fading one into the other like the stone skipping across the water, leaving traces of the promises that remain

reminders of the moon waxing, waning but ever present, even in the darkest sky, the blackest night like the tides coming in high receding back again low

amidst seasons repeating, growth new and amazing, fullest in Spring leveling out in heat of Summer

colors vibrant in the arrival of Fall giving way to fields fallow in the cold of Winter beneath icy waters blankets of snow

only for new leaves to awaken new buds to bloom for the circle that is unending to grow once more

there will always be the circle of birth, life and death as there will always be the impediments of destruction by nature’s wrath & beauty

there will always be disease, famine, unwelcome pestilence and epidemics as they seem to impede, dissuade & deter us from moving forward

always there will be the circle of life & everything a part and people will move forward, move past and move through

for when I see the birth of babies, seeds being sown in gardens, fields and when it begins to snow again cottonwood seeds, to be planted where they may, I marvel

at the ever widening circles of life

A Circle of Life

Nature’s Deluge Radiant

A storm shattered the quiet of the night
the calm still air broken by gusts of wind
bringing a deluge of rain in beating
against the house to run in sheets
down the window panes

but the morning breaks and with it
sun shining,, patches of blue sky
the remains of puffy white clouds

the storm merely a harbinger
of good things to come
bringing change in its’ wake

for change is the herald, the messenger
of hope and of promise radiant
in showing that in each new day
there will always lie the beginnings
of new things

as rays of sun light the paths well tread
there will be another cross roads
down which a new path will be taken
and life will move forward
once again

New Impressions

Wide open spaces of endless miles
of fields, farms and tracks of homes

stand in stark contrast to cities
choked with factory smoke stacks
with the polluted exhaust of traffic

that rise up to collectively gather
in visible, relentless chains
of greenhouse gases choking
off life giving

oxygen the memories of a lifetime
of living growing accustomed
to cacophonic decibels
of noise
now silenced

replaced with nature’s music
a symphonic aura of colorful
notes

blue skies redolent of wind &
breezes filled with the green
chattering of crickets

sunsets sweeping the horizon
in pink and purple hues
akin to stringed instruments
playing

where a night is lit dazzling
with lightning and thunder
fire bright yellows and orange
an orchestration of astounding
proportions

there are new impressions
waking all my senses, increasing
my awareness

to add to and multiply memories
creating the complexity
& beauty
of a life

Tarnished Dreams

Dreams follow us down each path tread
whilst children dream of flying free
as the ceiling falls away
to reveal blackest night and stars

other dreams tarnish in light of day
youth is vanquished and vanishes
revealing the harshness of life's littering
dreams hidden beneath its' debris

held in the ire of those who are
envious of those who dare to dream
tethered by a thread stronger
than the spider's woven web and
devoid of a destination

yet it is the ironic situation
they intuit themselves immersed in
as they observe fragments of memory
creeping closer a breath away

delivering the ultimate realization
they too have dreams longing to wake
thirsting for a heart to beat within
which has lain dormant too long
in youth not lost but sleeping

Fall’s Raven

The darkness of Fall nights without light is
like endeavoring to look through
the blackest wing of the raven

A Bitter Embrace

The fog moving with stealth
settles in for the night
heavy & without substance

coveting each nuance of sound
even the leaves drifting
to settle upon the ground
are silent familiars

this chilling miasma still here
as morning arrives within
its’ bitter embrace

a mask covering snaking streets
alley ways and buildings
where even lamp lights
shine bleakly
dampened

a spider abandoning its’ post
leaves dew drops glistening
as jewels upon its’ web
