Thunder in the Distance

thunder storm
Google Image

thunder in the distance
a train moving
down the tracks
metal grating
against metal
creating
hieroglyphic maps
or is it storm clouds
black and angry
when life is
at our back

raising doubts
that squelch
the laughter
when everything after
can only be thunder
or the rumble
of an unrequited earth
giving birth
to yet another
mountain or is it

only a waterfall in a
distant forest
raising its’
voice in chorus
and we hear it as
thunder in the distance
creating refuge
from an
incendiary past

always keep in mind that
just beyond our
quiet solitude
whether real or an
imaginary cast
there will always be
thunder in the distance
waking us to the
reality of
life

Rose Colored Glasses

rose-colored-glasses
Google Image

do you look at me through
rose colored glasses
waiting for the
clouds to part in
a display of sunshine

or do you wait cautiously
for the dust to settle
as i pick up the pieces
that fall without
ceremony to your feet

knowing that life cannot
be only black & white
for it is only after
storms the rainbows appear
& love is the tie that binds

No Smooth Edges

Smooth Edges

Altered Google Image

vestiges of what can’t be seen
as you try to catch a glimpse
in the filtered sunlight
that catches particles of dust

of the fragments, pieces of
what you were like
not so long ago
like torn pages of a book

a bitter pill to swallow this
thing called change
this thing called
age

is always hard like diamonds
jagged edges before they are
polished smooth they scrape
your knees, making your
hands raw

for life has no smooth edges
and even glass shatters
when broken like
the remnants of a lifetime

will matter to no one but you
and as the sun drops
beneath the horizon
the glass darkens
as you try to catch a glimpse

a lone chickadee heralds songs

I don’t normally do form poetry but was a bit taken in by Tony’s prompt and explanation so thought I’d give it a try.  My take on a Cinquain.

Tendrils

ivy-trees

ivy winds ’round tree trunks
clinging to tree bark as
though hanging on for life
not even the strongest wind
can sever ties of tendrils

Small Villages

tiny hooded mushrooms                              tiny mushrooms
clustered like small
villages popping up
amidst blades of grass
giving shelter to
microscopic life
sheltered beneath them

Spirit Play

Altered Google Image

my spirit plays amongst
microscopic particles
of sand sparkling
left clean

as the salty ocean water
leaves trails
of foam behind

an intruder…
but nought as it
takes flight drifting
in and out of wildflowers

as a honey bee
gathering
golden pollen
from within each
petaled wonder

taking with it the
beauty of fragrance
it once again rises

to find healing in
the sunrays
cleansing in
the raindrops

letting colors of
the rainbow
penetrate
to become one
with its’ soul

to wrap itself
in grandeur of
nature to embody
it all

my spirit shares a
moment in time
cascading
down waterfalls

smoothing pebbles
in a stream
catching glimpses and
reflections
its’ life
embodiment of mine
