Sweet Layers of Imagination

Imagination

There are moments I believe
that de’ja’ vu really does exist
when I walk into another world,
an alternate landscape

to escape my obsessed compulsion
crafting a skewed vision filled
with black and white reality

ethereal as stepping on solid clouds
drifting over a technicolor scene
where a yellow brick road
leads to perspicacity
strangely curious

or yet upon closing my eyes
I sleep so deep imagination unfolds
in sweetest layers I inhale
swallowing each one
anxious for
the next

beautiful as pastillage
settling on my tongue
like honey

I see a girl who speaks to trees,
smiling at flowers who
innately knows
her secrets

and where the eyes of animals
reflect her soul
back to her in
infinite profusions
of color

painting details like the spices
completing ingredients
in foods from everywhere
smelling of a full life
in every inhaled
breath

where upon touching a mirror
she steps through liquid mercury
pure as water chaste
before rigidity touches
her image
with age

yet these images might be to me
only lucid as a million stars
in the night sky where
Zeus holds court

only quick
in twilight hours
before I wake

***BLACK HONEY FARE***

A girl inhaling clean salty air
on the coastline of the Pacific
once harboring pristine beaches
held in awe in the early fifties

Cradled first in a mother’s arms
embraced in a warm blanket of sun
sand sticking to arms and legs
to tiny feet and pudgy hands raised

Eyes swallowing the ocean forever
encompassing a spotless horizon
just a sweet taste of waves and wind
‘til progress brazenly stepped in

Iron giant beast bereft of eyes
harnessed to flat steel platforms
began springing forth on Hwy 1
like parched wilted weeds in the sun

They anointed the soil like locusts
legs attached with heads in motion
digging deep in the earth drinking
oil thick like honey sickly menacing

Pollution crept in first unnoticed
air thick at times with heady fumes
sticky black tar littered beaches
Tin Can Beach amassed its leaches

Years were swept as incoming tides
realization of what man had made
eyes burned of air toxic to breathe
a process to clean, erect a sheath

Signs were posted of ‘Danger Beware’
bulldozers took away tin cans and trash
Bolsa Chica Beach left in its wake
all was done for humanities’ sake

A woman inhaling remnants of air
on the coastline of the Pacific
iron giants without eyes still stare
never sated on their black honey fare

The Color of Taffy

taffy colored

Google Image

she sees her lying in a
field of wildflowers
adrift in sweet williams,
asters and pinks
cradled in queen anne’s lace

her hair once the color
of taffy now streaked
gold by the sun
her freckles blending
into honey on her face

she closes her eyes to
drift along with her
feeling the breeze a
silk scarf unfurled
ever so soft as satin

until she hears as
from a distance far
a soft whistle blowing
faintly she nearly feels
an approaching train

but as she opens her
eyes the girl with the
taffy colored hair and
honeyed skin slips
away leaving her

in a small cold room
the whistle from the
tea kettle blowing
louder…steam rising
in the still dank air

she is brought ’round
her eyes glance about at
paint cracked walls to
a chipped tile counter
a clock chiming the hour

as she blinks back hot
salty tears to pull her
ragged sweater about her
she touches a dirty vase
holding a bit of wildflowers
