Life Yawning Wide

Time stands still once more in the wake of change
in the midst of flowers touching the surface even as they
lie in the earth breaching, yearning to breathe the air

Feel the trembling leaves vibrate a rustling leaf song
layers of green penetrating the sky, never the clouds
puzzle pieces form a life yawning wide, incomplete

Each puzzle piece has unto its own another puzzle
the frantic search to be free, taking flight with wings
untethered as an eagle gliding on air currents

Sees the world with the clarity of vision, of knowing
freedom is fragile, beyond the grasp of recognition
a fleeting memory held within as in a vague dream

The Chestnut Tree

There is a behemoth of a Chestnut tree
now standing alongside my broken road
amidst the passage of time it’s seen it all
never made to fall nor can it be budged

houses built long ago now aged with time
gardens planted and many fences built
between slats of a fence it does not bow
with heavy boughs it’s always stood witness

whilst the wind is causing its’ branches
to bend & sway in rhythmic dances
you can hear the rustling of chestnuts
like tiny instruments softly stirring

waiting for another day another year
to find their freedom is in their falling
each twisting round in another season
to tumble soundlessly to the ground

The Amber Mirror

The paradoxical algorithms of life
speak of birth and death colored
with a beginning and an end
both caught within the shadows
of rules, mandates and laws

tasting and speaking of freedoms
both ‘masked’ in lies and deceit

a truth hidden behind closed doors
spoken in silent unheard whispers
seen through the eyes of the faceless

while the legends of time and history
move between the spaces of passions
where wisdom is a time honored truth
where love of others and of self
is the resin that frees them

an amber mirror that reveals life

The Chrysalis

The day opens in darkness
clouds and rain the
only companions…still

the lightness of morning
cannot be turned away

through the smattering
of untold numbers
of raindrops
on my window

I see it coming

much like the chrysalis
that holds the butterfly
safe and secure

or is its’ beauty and freedom
and a need to ‘be’
trapped

is the chrysalis its’ prison
will it wake to the
darkness of day

or will it see light
seeping through

as it touches the raindrops
in its’ path
leaving them in its’ wake
as it breaks free

I see it coming

the butterfly will become aware
as the chrysalis
falls away

like the light that filters through
drying the raindrops
on the window

so the butterfly’s wings
will dry and spread

then the butterfly will finally
take flight
will be free

I see it coming

Dreams of Flight

i-will-be

Closing my eyes dream like synapses
coalesce images of youthful fears
tainted by mountain high and
valley lows of emotions

feathered wings in flight I fancied
releasing me from my humble dawning
with the smell of lemons and lilacs
growing against a backdrop of cement
tainted with the odors of asphalt

on the other side of town peppered
with factory workers, shop owners
life ached for gleaming upscale as
housewives tended children crying
dutiful lives of status quo

but only dreams took me flying
into the darkness of night
smelling of sweet honeysuckle
scaling walls of rising freedom

as now all dreams of tender youth
have left me I no longer fear
nor struggle from whence I came
for the spring of my soul
bubbles forth a peace within

**THE NEED FOR FREEDOM**

Fireworks have already begun
booming, sizzling sounds
coming from the stadium
coming from the neighborhood

Freedom can be many things
the sweet taste of chocolate
the smell of hot coffee
hearing music in nature

Freedom is found in writing
in the need to have opinion
to worship or not as a choice
to be part or not in everything

Freedom is being accepted
in the world around you
to accept others in your world
to not cause harm in needing it

Fireworks will begin after dark
lighting up the sky in brilliance
reminding those who need freedom
there are still places to find it

My hope is that for all those who are searching for freedom that it is found in all the places you might not have thought it would be.

***STORY OF HERITAGE AND LOVE***

Humanity, family, individuals, you & me
all connected by a universal family tree
black and white photo of a married couple
telling me a story of heritage and love

Migrated to Mexico, then on to freedom
real or imagined, a family in my homeland
their names Fabian and Julia Naegelin
met in a far away providence Alsace Lorraine

They will never see what the world is now
a world always replanted in fields fallow
with lives lost justified on shifting ideals
none of which is tangible, none of which is real

The horrors of war, of misguided youth
taking lives of those whom they should sleuth
of their histories that brought them close
that they really know each others’ shores

Humanity, family, individuals, you & me
all connected by a universal family tree

telling me a story of heritage and love

The image below is a restaurant in Lyon, France but could be a restaurant anywhere in the world. Recently there were lives lost in France for ideals that are, tragically, only that…ideals. It is important to have ideals but they should not be taken to the extreme causing what is really important to be lost to us all.The reality of people’s lives lost and how really, we are all connected to each other in a genetically complex puzzle that will never be fully known, and that those genetics means we are all connected intrinsically to one another gave rise to this prose. My heart goes out to all those whose families are touched by this and many other real events that happen in our lives as life continues to move forward.

Heritage

Freedom’s Muse

She remembers freedom
like a forest trail
following her
beckoning

tree branches tender
caressing
showing her
heart’s desire as
budding leaves
green but
not with envy

her muse following
not as a shadow
but as one
privy to life’s
secrets

wound ’round about
as vines clinging
to tree trunks
laden but with
no regrets

dancing on fallen
leaves
a gift of her
imagination

Heart Shadows

Trepidation follows my
heart to cling to me
as a shadow
following me
always close
tugging at my sleeve
with whispered angst
urging me to worry
plying my thoughts
with tumultuous yearning
to follow a path
leading nowhere
but to the
depths of despair but
I cannot as I
turn my head
sever the chain
that binds me and
walk away for only
letting go
gives me the freedom
that I seek
that gives me peace
