A Bitter Embrace

The fog moving with stealth
settles in for the night
heavy & without substance

coveting each nuance of sound
even the leaves drifting
to settle upon the ground
are silent familiars

this chilling miasma still here
as morning arrives within
its’ bitter embrace

a mask covering snaking streets
alley ways and buildings
where even lamp lights
shine bleakly
dampened

a spider abandoning its’ post
leaves dew drops glistening
as jewels upon its’ web

Fall Familiar

Memories Dying Embers

Memory Illusive

I see you tangibly close beside me
laughter still within you
a smile on your face

do you still see me here & now
or a trace of a girl dancing

brevity of memories hinting at life
shared with children…with her

do you know she is gone traveling
with the moon & stars in heaven

I see you tangibly close beside me
laughter still within you
a smile on your face

do you know your time has shifted
as the sands within the tides

ensnaring the memories you captured
now scattered fragments of light

still your eyes embrace her once more
a cherished resemblance of me

wisps of years gone encircling you
briefly in moments & then vanishing

I see you tangibly close beside me
laughter still within you
a smile on your face

the embers are still glowing brightly
not ready to engage in dying

I know your spirit still resides within
I know there still is you smiling

A Waterfall of Violets

Waterfall Violets

A rolling-pin gracing
the kitchen wall
visages of her life
speckles  in the landscape
of my mind

a woman of small stature
with black hair
almond smiling eyes
a happiness laced laugh

I am embraced, a nephew’s wife
I left my shoes by the wall
inside the threshold

a home far from Kyoto
amidst the evergreen trees
I entered a coalesced union
both east and west

cultivated plants to bloom
black wrought iron shelves
a waterfall of African violets
blossoming shades of color

pink
violet
white
blue

feisty approach to business
offerings of octopus
dried salty seaweed

gastronomy not fathomed
teaching me her language
sharing plant knowledge
easier to impart

the rolling-pin still
flaunts her efforts
black char marks

remind me of a fusion
a friendship
between east and west

This is my fond memory of a woman from Japan named Nobu.  I met her years ago when I was married to her nephew. She was married to an American serviceman she met in World War II. She lived here for many years until her husband’s passing and then returned to Japan where she eventually passed away. It was an honor to know here.

A Single Wink In Time

Powder blue painted firmament
inhaled in a single breath
a cushioned cradle for my soul

hands ciphering the distance
to embrace this tranquility
to coalesce this miracle

sun’s warmth salubrious
rays pulse gold nuggets of life
a radiant fragrant aloe balm

touching a single wink of time
becoming a scope of magnitude
am shrouded in a calm destiny

weighted heavens are buoyant
evident of stellar celestial bodies
emanating love and I am home

Wink In Time

***COLORADO LAGOON***

Always scorching heat in So Cal
enfolding me a sticky sweet embrace
thirsting for the cool of water
to lap at the brown skin of my face

Hopeful an outing in anticipation
to a place of sand and salt blowing
Colorado Lagoon a sleepy fresh water
would quench in a pinch for swimming

Tantamount to an ocean beach shore
concession stands to take your coins
even as a quarter sparkled at my feet
ephemeral as a cool wind purloined

The Notes Embrace You

pipe organ
Google Image

i see you dancing
on the floor of the
pizza parlor
a smile playing
across your face

where every note
that is pumped
out of the theatre
pipe organ
embraces you

plys your feet
with rhythm
only you would know
caring not that
eyes are watching

i see you even though
you are gone now
a memory that
spilled out of
the letter you wrote

Remnants Loved

Remants Loved

Altered Google Image

we might walk along
the ocean shore
to collect driftwood
a carnage
i implore
washed here from
other distant lands

or linger as i do now
in your embrace
listening to words
that will leave
no sign or trace
we have been here as
the wind and sea
carry footprints

away so effortlessly
but tell me only
of your
passion filled heart
and do not share
that which you
should not impart
of secrets once shared

with another heart true
who you left for a time
  so that you
  could walk with me
  here to collect driftwood
  washed smooth and clean
remnants loved and
left by the sea

Chilli Pepper Lights

Altered Google Image

the first time i saw you
i wondered
how anyone could be
so animated
a mysterious possibility

i had needed a roommate
to share the expense
to balance the cost
to help make sense

of coming thousands
of miles to a place
not familiar
faces all blending
never congenial

i walked a different land
streets unknown
nothing planned
to meet you

bubbling over with
so much enthusiasm
i gingerly broached it
a tremulous chasm

we walked into your
loving abode
art panoramic
stories untold

chilli pepper lights
hung enchantingly so
about the ceiling
embracing my soul

the first time i saw you
i wondered
how anyone could be
so animated
a mysterious possibility

Just to say, that some roommates do work out.  I only spent a year at seminary and have been friends ever since with Paula, an amazing artist and a person with heart. Here’s to you, Paula!

Time’s Door

the coastal terrain whizzes
by in my effort to catch up
to claim time as my ally

drift wood laden shores
with rocky strewn beaches
such alien distant creatures

my car picks up speed on
straightaways, slowing down
on curves the car sways

when will i reach destination
unknown a room with a key
time once again has flown

walking on the sandy beach
salt spray, shells and stone
i no longer feel alone

my thoughts weave about the
elusive tide of time’s door
plying soul and spirit’s core

reaching inside to pull my
heart throughout times’ eternity
journey’s calm is wrought

as though the sea winds have
wrapped me within their embrace
helping me again to face

a world where the essence of
time flies capturing unnoticed
years unfurling tinctured rhyme
