***BLACK HONEY FARE***

A girl inhaling clean salty air
on the coastline of the Pacific
once harboring pristine beaches
held in awe in the early fifties

Cradled first in a mother’s arms
embraced in a warm blanket of sun
sand sticking to arms and legs
to tiny feet and pudgy hands raised

Eyes swallowing the ocean forever
encompassing a spotless horizon
just a sweet taste of waves and wind
‘til progress brazenly stepped in

Iron giant beast bereft of eyes
harnessed to flat steel platforms
began springing forth on Hwy 1
like parched wilted weeds in the sun

They anointed the soil like locusts
legs attached with heads in motion
digging deep in the earth drinking
oil thick like honey sickly menacing

Pollution crept in first unnoticed
air thick at times with heady fumes
sticky black tar littered beaches
Tin Can Beach amassed its leaches

Years were swept as incoming tides
realization of what man had made
eyes burned of air toxic to breathe
a process to clean, erect a sheath

Signs were posted of ‘Danger Beware’
bulldozers took away tin cans and trash
Bolsa Chica Beach left in its wake
all was done for humanities’ sake

A woman inhaling remnants of air
on the coastline of the Pacific
iron giants without eyes still stare
never sated on their black honey fare

****One Cottonwood Seed***

cottonwood seeds
adrift on the wind
living things
brought forth alive
as on the sea’s
changing tide

relentless in their need
to find safe harbor

cottonwood seeds
clinging to the thistle
purple flower bright
caught in the storm drain
fluttering
from the car vent
resting on a dashboard

relentless in their need
to find safe harbor

cottonwood seeds
in piles by the curbside
soft as downy feathers
white as the newly
fallen snow
safety in numbers

relentless in their need
to find safe harbor

a cottonwood seed
catches an updraft
as birds in flight do
coasting for miles
from where it grew
a patch of earth
to take root

relentlessly it’s come
to find safe harbor

*******Always Tomorrow*******

the tops of pine trees
push their way
out of the fog
like the stuffing
come loose
from an old pillow

who are you, I ask?

the puppies fur
like fluffy cotton
after her bath
but coarser and dense
the static of cold air
pulling it upright

who are you, I ask?

the pre-spring earth
teaming with life
bring juncos, crows
starlings & chickadees
spilling across the yard
the excitement rising

there is always tomorrow

Unfurled & Rising

Crow

Google Image

her thoughts take flight
like a flock of birds
their wings unfurled
& rising like a
plume of smoke

only to tumble down
to earth
as though
pierced through
by arrows

so when the rain comes
they are carried swift
crashing
over waterfalls
to be dashed
against boulders

for she longs for calm
that may only come
when they settle
in a pool
of clear water
becoming smooth
as river stones
at rest

Flight of Fancy

Take flight with me
on a wonderful sea
where white caps
are edged with
filigree
where dreams take
repose on fingers
and toes
where your dream
shows you what’s
meant to be

Come away with me
on a flight of
fancy
where dreams are
found not
pillow bound
where blue skies
stay forever blue
where rainbows
touch earth
as a river flows

Take flight with me
in perfect harmony
where musical
notes are
like honey bees
filling the air
with the taste
of song
where the scent
of love
always belongs

Bluejay Indignation

They play tag with one another
running along the fence and up
over the stones in the yard to
climb up the nut tree in hopes
a bounty to be found as they
hang upside down by clawed feet
picking each nut to peel back
green busily to drop earthbound
unbeknownst of company watching

The Bluejay watches unamused in
seeing two squirrels climbing up
into his tree and taking his nuts
to drop them to the ground so in
righteous indignation he responds
telling them loudly they don’t
belong here running up and down
making such a mess of things but
they ignore his loud proclaiming

Airwaves

The airwaves brought
you to me from
around the globe
the other side
of the earth

                                                           Up  “popped” the box
                                                           telling me you
                                                           had arrived in
                                                           grand fashion to
                                                           tickle me inside

Your voice emanated
via your words
sending your love
with a big ‘Hug’
making me laugh

                                                                        The airwaves brought
                                                                        you inside my room
                                                                        an electronic link
                                                                        from the other side
                                                                        of the earth

Leave the Earth Behind

Take flight on Eagle’s wings
soaring spectacular uplifted
on currents of wind to
heights atop mountains,
river currents swift
Leave the earth behind

Create song as Chickadees,
Mockingbirds and Sparrows do
melodious notes of harmony
invisible ties binding together
choruses blending
Leave the earth behind

Grow within and without amongst
colors vibrant of Tulips, Daffodils,
Hyacinths, Pansies, Sweet Williams,
Marigolds, Pinks and Roses a
spectrum of hues vast, timeless
Leave the earth behind

Soak up the sun and raindrops
with the fruit trees budding
prolific nurturing fruit cocooned,
the heather, azaleas,
rhododendrons blooming
Leave the earth behind you

Becoming one with the earth
