The Chestnut Tree

There is a behemoth of a Chestnut tree
now standing alongside my broken road
amidst the passage of time it’s seen it all
never made to fall nor can it be budged

houses built long ago now aged with time
gardens planted and many fences built
between slats of a fence it does not bow
with heavy boughs it’s always stood witness

whilst the wind is causing its’ branches
to bend & sway in rhythmic dances
you can hear the rustling of chestnuts
like tiny instruments softly stirring

waiting for another day another year
to find their freedom is in their falling
each twisting round in another season
to tumble soundlessly to the ground

A Dance of Planets

The Christmas Star shone brilliant
in the evening star for many eyes
to see but hid it’s brilliance from me

for Saturn & Jupiter danced in tandem
on a stage sprinkled with a universe
of stars holding court for them

and I stepped into the predawn light
to see a night sky littered with stars
applauding a new day in dawning

A Child’s Request

The shadow of leaves from a tree
dance across the house next door
but in the darkness of last eve
only the children’s shadows
poured

dressed in Halloween costumes
finer than any Hallows Eve before
they came and kept leaving their
ghostly imprints on concrete
floor

smiles and laughter challenging
fears of a society that they
would dispel as though magic
were in the air and fear
just queerish

a memory of one small girl
a costume only a thin cloak
her words uncovered for she
asked for only a hug
nothing more

my heart was warmed
by her gesture
of which I obliged
in loving
measure

A Dance of Trees and Bossa Nova

The clouds black in the distance
with patches of blue sky mingled in
as the clouds migrate close overhead

big fat drops of rain are resounding
everywhere they are hitting
with a big plop, a splat, being replaced
with millions more in their place

as I listen to the gentle, smooth refrain
of jazz and bossa nova I watch intently
trees in the distance are seemingly
swaying to and fro, branches lithe
leaves tremble as though listening

when it is the wind of nature’s breath
that propels them in their dancing
gives them the moves of the bossa nova
the rhythm of life as if speaking to me

what a glorious day to just be alive
to absorb your sounds of music playing
as we flutter to the peaceful strains
in synchronous harmony with the wind

A Dance Of Epic Proportions

The fog is heavy as a blanket
& thick enough for warmth
but chilling to the touch

the heaviness of how it lies
upon the landscape
muffles sound

a density that ensconces trees
& enfolds houses

one might believe they can
all but move it aside
with the touch of a hand

but it will not move
not willingly

it will wait below whilst
a brilliant shining orb
burns above &
cannot be seen
nor felt

a dance of epic proportions
goes on outside
my window

who is the real master
or mistress
here

a hidden shift that will
only reveal the answer
by one of the dancers
next moves

but for now as in a game
game of chess
it is a stalemate

the dancers seemingly
frozen in time

The Music of The Conch Shell

The conch sea shell is a reminder always
of where it is she really belongs

of small hands holding the beauty
of ocean waves within its’ confines
hugging her ear & she in awe and wonder

even now when she cradles it closely
and listens longingly and intently

she can see the waves building high
coming to crash along the sandy shore
where seabirds add calls to the score

to a music with a wondrous crescendo
the color of sea salt spraying her skin

the wind picking up the string section
with soprano highs & contralto lows
& a sky of variegated blues the backdrop

connecting the ocean stage to the horizon
unseeing of the stage hands hidden below

but bringing memories of dolphins dancing
upon the ocean stage & the magic of whale song
whose singing plays the melody all the while

she knows with utmost certainty she will return
to the place where she really belongs

Conch Shell Music

A Magical Dance

See the youth that resides within me
mirrored dark curls framing a woman’s
face who now breathes easier

not often the case when questions curled
like a hazy halo of smokey confusion
within my days and nights

watch me convey knowledge soul filled
now a sign of experiential vibrant color
a glowing gold not in the guise
of youth’s vanity

see my spirit soar within mirrored eyes
clear as mountain spring waters
seeing deep as ocean valleys
thunderous as waterfalls

filling crystal clear rivers running swift
choreographed with a magical dance
of a sprite or fairy or two

Dance of a Fairy

***White Flags Flying***

Excitement palpable within me
butterflies dancing
fluttering wings beating
against my stomach

every year the very same
each time I am dreaming of
tall pines, pine cones
needles making

a blanket beneath the tent
heavy and green smelling
of musty canvas
and flags

waving on a line strung across
our site by dad
clean diapers drying
marking the spot

where the tent is pitched
a Coleman stove sets
ready to cook a meal
a lantern lit

lighting branches a reflection
a glow of campfire
the sky filled with stars
happiness overflowing

***Dance of Fall***

The leaves pirouette
slowly dancing
their way to earth
as they are
caught up one
atop the other
in rainwater puddles
once devoid of color
now laughing as
golds, reds,
yellows, oranges
make of them
a floating canvas
of nature’s art
