The Sky So Close

This evening when I took my dog out I stood in awe
as I have done very few times in my life while looking at the sky
the clouds of gray and white as the sun broke through
I have felt this before but so rarely
I felt as though I could touch the very blue of the sky
as though it was so close it became more solid before me
instead of part of the Universe that surrounds me
the clouds felt the same as though they were so very close
I might touch them and feel the mass of them
even though they drifted about me and did not stay still

there may be one who causes everything in life
to look more beautiful than it has ever felt before
when I was a very young girl before everything changed
I might have looked at Nature in such a way
in wonderment of its very being
but now, incredulous as it may seem and it does
my world is as beautiful to me as when I was a girl
a world that holds me in awe and I am entranced
by the mystery of it, the magic of it
and life now begins anew

**Beautiful In Flight**

Be not one to tarnish
your self esteem by
climbing mountains
of others’ expectations

stand up for your beliefs
bring them into sunlit day
& out of darkest night

dare to dream your own dreams
lest you enter an abyss
of others’ nightmares
quagmires of doubt

tap into hidden strengths
& object to old school thought
& expound others’ worth

do not fear being rejected
based on the unacceptable
you are universally a part
of being beautiful

be recognized on your own merit
splendid & vast as oceans
quiet but fearless in all

sing out among starry skies
be brave as birds in flight
ply your wounds in love
be bold…you are here

Beauty in Flight

********Things You Left ********

hibiscus grows beautiful
reds
oranges
yellows
i see them through your eyes
eyes no longer seeing
& the mockingbird sings
no song of his own
as the sun sets
spilling light
over those things
you left
for us to love

Frescoes by Moonlight

Noctambulations Patr.1

Google Image

frescoes by moonlight and
who do you think you are?
michelangelo painting without
his soft plaster mixed hues
with varied colored pigments

standing amidst your
cans of spray paint beneath
the street lamps on a street
littered with bits of broken
bottles , dumpsters overflowing

pop cans and candy wrappers
as you gaze upon your creation
do you hold onto those who
created before you..van gogh,
gauguin, picasso, renoir, dali

do you think of michael and
his sistine chapel, his david
are they your collective muse…
do you hear their sighs as
you work or is it just another

tenement wall you hope to
disguise as something else…
transforming into that which
is beautiful and know it
will stand the test of time

someone else might call this
naught but graffiti, that you
deface public property but even
poverty and despair can be art
i call it frescoes by moonlight

Broken Colored Glass

she sits looking out her
bedroom window trying
to remember
WHEN!
when did everything
come apart…begin
to DISINTEGRATE

perpendicular this life
with that other
universe
where others
remember
WHEN!
parallel lives

opening up inside her
shattered mind
yesterday it was
all CLEAR!
her four walls
like everyone else’s
painted beautiful

portraits of children
on walls to
recount memories
times of laughter
now fading
becoming something
WHEN!

reminiscent becomes
faltering steps
eager to see a
likeness that
goes with a name
CLEAR! as
crystal

unlike the clouded
looking-glass
where someone else
appears before
her eyes
WHEN!
disguising features

thought she knew
them another
time apart from the
kaleidoscope
broken colored glass
she knows now
WHEN!

will become as distant
as the broken pieces
of her mind
a heart no longer
disturbed as
there will be
nothing to remember

WHEN……

I have met so many people in my life with either a mental illness or simply a break down of the mind’s capacity to remember. My aunt, now many years gone, was a fun loving, intelligent woman who for years ran my uncle’s business and whose memory in later years vanished with the onset of Alzheimer’s.  This once very independent woman, who did so much for others, ultimately went to my cousin’s to live so she could have someone take care of her in her decline.  I was not privy to these difficult years, in which she lost touch with her reality, but often wonder how it must be and how very close we all could be to such a reality such as her life became.

Beautiful Feet

Hair silver strands of silk
sunlight dancing against her
face drawn but still youthful
few age lines caress her face
time tenderly holds as dear

Looking down her eyes light
on beautiful feet that
still loved to dance

Eyes in the mirror remember
times youth was her friend
running alongside her as she
played the wind in her hair
train flying down the tracks

Looking down her eyes light
on beautiful feet that
still loved to dance

Visions of newborn babies
light ’round her head with
cries of delightful chatter
growing into children who
quickly grew having their own

Looking down her eyes light
on beautiful feet that
still loved to dance

Aging shows in her reflection
a body very slowly moving
her mind cradles the energy
youth once displayed now
disparaged by passing years

Looking down her eyes light
on beautiful feet that
still loved to dance

My mother aged gracefully, I felt, although her ill health made life very difficult but in the few years just prior to her death, she would mention now and again how her feet were still nice looking. Her own mother’s feet were knarled and unsightly due to arthritis so I believe it was important to her somehow that her own remained beautiful. She  loved to dance so having feet still able to do so was important to her.
