Rose Trellis

Rose Garden Trellis

age creeps slowly
like wild roses
on the
garden trellis

thorns heedless
to her touch
while walking
through
the summer garden

she remembers the
veil of lace she wore
at someone else’s
wedding?

in a gown of satin
with seed pearls
sewn on her
mud stained
train
vows now broken

remembers now as she
touches her skin
a face
now marked ‘aged’
& when memory lifts
the wedding veil

her youth radiates
still soft as the
rose petals
on the
garden trellis

Memorie’s Ghost Child

children playing tag ball
‘now you’re it!’
you can’t see me playing
at their heals a bit

memories’ ghost child
behind the tree
child playing tag counting
doesn’t notice me

she floats along gray shadows
today’s yesteryear
bare feet and laughter
mimic in their ears

they hose each other down
a hot summer’s day
while she plays alongside
age has no sway

after they’ve gone inside
she plays on
forever free of life’s cares
a ghost child’s song

Beauty

She only saw blue veins worming through
liver spotted hands, joints knarled as
aged tree branches turning this way,
that way, unable to grasp unless with
pain that penetrated deep into sadness

We saw a heart overflowing with love,
heard laughter pealing like sacred bells
high in a church tower and knew a young
woman walked alongside her straight and
tall apart from her bent leg and cane

She thought if only time would slow and
beauty isn’t only skin deep because I
feel the years all the way through and I
really commiserate with the Ugly Duckling
longing to be that beautiful Swan

We thought how beautiful she is especially
when she smiles making us warm inside amid
gloomy days always sunny causing us to think
how wonderful to age with such grace and to
cause others to feel as beautiful as she
