The Artistic Magic of The Madrone

The overcast foggy day creeps to settle
into the sunless summer morning
holding nothing magical or surreal

as held within the moments of salty air
hovering over the tops of ocean waves
collecting on beaches covered
in driftwood, grasses and
foamy tides

where upon the scenic artistry looms large
seeing breathtaking stands of Madrone trees
branches curving, bending to sky and ground

their paper like bark peeling ornately
as though the artists brush is continually
sweeping strokes of orange-red vibrance
to reveal a satiny silver glow
as polished

wherein I know now living far from
the majesty of trees and the salty smell
of ocean air that settles on my skin

true happiness can only reside within me
whilst close to nature’s wonder of
the ocean and Madrone tree’s
magic

  1. I appreciate them now more than ever as now that I am living at my daughter’s house and she is so far away from everything (trees are around the periphery of where she lives…like someone cut them all down to build the homes here), I miss them. I have always been an ocean kind of person as I was raised in So CA and went to the ocean as often as I could. But I visited Pt Townsend recently and so enjoyed what I miss. I could visit there often and never tire of it. Thanks for the comment and yes, I am well. Aloha!

    1. I love Port Townsend! Every time I visit my friend on Whidbey, which I will be doing again late September early October, this time with my husband, I always take the ferry over. Lately my thing is to drive as far as Port Angeles and head up Hurricane Ridge. So beautiful! 🥰

      1. When I was a younger woman and still able to back pack, I went with a group of friends up to Hurricane Ridge and camped in tents. Quite the experience to be sure. So glad you have your friend you can visit there. Aloha!

  2. What a beautiful and visually enjoyable writing on your Madrone tree Renee, beautifully poetically illustrated.
Your Madrone tree bears resemblance to our Stringy Bark tree here in Australia.
    Kindest regards and best wishes.

    1. Thanks Ian! I love the Madrone. It’s natural beauty in the shedding of its’ bark that reveals so much color is something to behold. Many trees to shed their bark in a similar manner but I love the Madrone. Thank you for visiting. Kind regards to you as well.

  3. Beautiful ode to nature, Renee, both in the poetic and in the illustrative artwork. The last stanza is very powerful: “true happiness can only reside within me”, so true and yes, in harmony with nature.

  4. This poem beautifully describes a peaceful scene of mist and trees. You even touched the senses as that salty air was on the breeze.. Just wonderful Renee.
And yes you are right true Happiness and contentment is found from within, but when you touch Nature and sit among Trees,( my favourite Wise- Old-Ones) Nothing much comes closer than to breathe in that peace and tranquillity as you sit with your back against their bark, looking through the Canopy to the sky above..

    Beautiful poem Renee..
    Much love my friend ❤

    1. I visited friends recently in Pt Townsend here, which is close to the ocean, and they have many of these beautiful trees. I am always inspired by their beauty and if I could but live close to them and the ocean, all would be well. But, alas, my path has not taken me back to those things I cherish and grew up with so I must be happy to make a visit and another memory. Thank you Sue. Much love to you as well. xoxo

  5. What beautiful images once again, Renee. Trees and the sea – two of my favorite things also. The madrone tree is very special with its bark, which you’ve described so well. It’s hard when we have to do without, but thankfully we have our memories. (We do have a lot of trees around us here for which I’m grateful. But I haven’t been able to travel to the ocean in more than two years. Can empathize with you!)

Hope things are going as well as possible for you and that you’re able to find some peace and quiet when needed.

    1. Thank you Betty. Have you been to Pt Townsend? They have magnificent groves of them lining the road on either side and I am in awe of their beauty. I take day trips to see trees now but I do love to drive…tiring though it may be….and am never sorry after going. Hope you are doing well.
