Star Studded Wonder

Star Studded Night

© 2013 Photo  by  Renee Espriu

walking steadily beneath
a blanket of star-studded
wonder brings to mind
only the beauty of a night
uninhibited, humbled
by a universe existing
of endless possibilities

whilst i step cautiously
on cracked pavement
over broken glass bottles
a remnant of someone..
someone else’s need to see
past the ugliness and
angry when they cannot

i see stark contrasting
opposites and what if…
as a million twinkling
lights fall upon all the
shadowed figures hiding
in alleys without doors
amongst filthy dumpsters

i feel undeserving of
my wanderlust for nature
as i breathe in the cold,
sharp night air i know
i am fortunate to still
have dreams this night
 instead of dreamless sleep

  2. Let me echo Brian’s welcome to dVerse – it’s good to have you with us.

I love this poem – the contrast between dreams and harsh reality, between urban and rural, between natural and built environments is right up my street.

  3. Welcome – I’ve only just joined recently and I have to say, they are a lovely bunch. Although it is sometimes a little humbling to see how much poetry knowledge and talent they have… I like the contrast between the smashed bottles and the starry skies – the sublime and the grotesque.

    1. Thanks MarinaSofia. I do hope to have a place here. I’ve tried another place or two and am looking for my niche…at least for a little while. Been writing most of my life and won’t say how long that is. 🙂

    1. Thank You Victoria! I have something in mind for today but my brain is a bit worn out tonight. I work at a computer all day everyday as my job so there are times when it is a bit hard to put it together. I think I will like dVerse.

  4. hey…great seeing you at dVerse…and love the verse you brought…it’s good to still have dreams…usually dreams are the last things to die..but if they do…ugh..good work on the contrasts as well in the million twinkling star part and the homeless amongst filthy dumpsters

    1. I am so pleased that the hippo gives you pause to smile and bring a bit of ‘feel good’ to your day Jamie. I know it must be difficult to conserve energy. I do hope you will keep us informed of when you will have your transplant. I know you will do well. Take Care.

      1. Thanks, Renee. We hope that in the end a transplant won’t be necessary .. working for that. Meanwhile, everyone’s good wishes and sharing of wonderful work make for lovely days.

        Be well and happy.
        Jamie

      2. I did not realize you had a choice but, of course, if you can not have to have one that would be the best. You are a very special person Jamie and I don’t have to have you in the same room with me to know that. You have enriched my life and for that I am grateful. Blessings.
