Bluejay Indignation

They play tag with one another
running along the fence and up
over the stones in the yard to
climb up the nut tree in hopes
a bounty to be found as they
hang upside down by clawed feet
picking each nut to peel back
green busily to drop earthbound
unbeknownst of company watching

The Bluejay watches unamused in
seeing two squirrels climbing up
into his tree and taking his nuts
to drop them to the ground so in
righteous indignation he responds
telling them loudly they don’t
belong here running up and down
making such a mess of things but
they ignore his loud proclaiming

  1. amazing poem renee. i love squirrels and birds, blue jay is a really pretty bird, actually a stunner i should say. we dont have them here.

squirrels are real darling, no matter how mischievous they are .

  2. Blue Jays are very loud in their protests. You should hear them if a hawk should show up by the bird feeders! Maybe you do… I enjoyed this very much–we have plenty of blue jays and squirrels around here too.

    1. Once when I was traveling and stopped at a rest area one started chattering away. I had no nuts and gave him sunflower seeds and he was so upset I thought he was going to come right up to me with his chatter but he would not touch the seeds. He definitely had gourmet taste. 🙂
